Thermo switches

Does anyone have a good source for the thermo switch for the fan and the temp gauge? Bike bandit has them, but I hoping to spend less than $50 each for them.

Thanks,
Michael

There are actually two separate ones... A thermo switch for the fan and a temperature sender for the Temp Gauge.

The sender for the Temp Gauge is different for different years, changing in 2001 when the newer gauge cluster was introduced.

Usually the thermostat housing will include both and you can find those on Ebay cheap.

In fact this new style one is from Indierocker (or his business partner), a moderator here on this forum:

Be sure to ask if it includes the electrical parts before ordering though.

why do you think that you need to replace them - what is wrong with your bike?

Temp guage barely moves of the peg. tested by shorting the wire to ground and it went all the way to hot, so it seems like high resistance in the probe. For the fan, it never comes on even when hot. Shorted that lead to ground and the fan runs. I checked for grounds and they seem fine.

How hot are you considering hot? These engines run HOT (220s before the fan is supposed to turn on) In the current weather in Phoenix my bike doesn't get hot enough to turn on the fans.

Also your thermostat may be stuck open (might not be electrical problem) bike may be running cool.

I would not immediately suspect the sensors, these are not likely to fail. My bet is your bike just isn't getting up to temp.

It gets hot enough to vent the coolant. I ran it pretty hard the other day and then let it idle for about 10 minutes inside @ 70 deg. It was pretty hot.

Hmm, they may be bad.. Check that they are properly grounding through the thermostat housing.. I think at least the sender works that way. The switch for the fans I don't recall if it does or not. (going from memory here, so that is never 100%)

You could also have a bad radiator cap. Thermostats, and caps go bad at times, thermo switches usually do not. You should also check to make sure that the fan is working properly. There is probably a procedure in the manual for check all of this. JB

Before this gets out of hand, lets go back to the original problem. Temp gauge barely moves off of the peg NO MATTER WHAT. I shorted the lead at the temp sensor and it indicated full hot of the chart. This indicates that the gauge and the wiring is good and the temp probe is bad. Once the temp gauge works then I can determine if the engine is hot enough to run the fan. Other Superhawks I have been around had the fans running and mine not. My fan has never run unless I short it to ground.

I at least need a new temp probe.

BTW I am a mechanic by trade, not bikes but still have temp control.

here is one on ebay if you want to roll the dice:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda...item51845e7a57

The part number is 37760-MT2-003 I did a reverse lookup on Ron Ayers site, there are lots of Hondas that use this same switch including the CBR600. Servicehonda lists it at $38.

This ebay seller has 37 of them listed:
