Suspension Setup

Hi all, I was wondering if someone could give advice on setting up the shock a little stiffer on my VTR. When I got it this spring the front was really stiff and the rear really soft so I used the screws on the front to soften the preload (I think) and it feels alot better but the rear is still too soft. Thanks a bunch in advance!

the VTR has 5 (iirc) position preload adjuster. turn it with the tool provided in the tool bag or use a screwdriver & hammer.

if you have the manual under your seat it tells you how to adjust everything back to stock so you can fine tune it from there. the rear has two adjustments. one you will need to tool in the kit and the other is a flathead screw on the right side of the bike on the bottom of the shock.

Wicked!

Thanks alot fella's. I got nothing with the bike ie. manual, tool kit so I'm gonna go try the hammer screw driver carefully now. A guy at work said for about a hundred bucks a shop could set it up according to my dimensions and weight, have you ever had it done? I'm told it's a world of difference

around here the basic setup ( setting sag ) is $40.00.

the stock parts aren't that great... upgrading & getting them setup does make a HUGE difference. search this site: there are a few options.

If you mean they little screws on the top of the fork, they are for the rebound damping, not the fork spring preload. The part that sticks up (with the little screw on top) should have lines around it. How many of these lines are showing?

The rear shock has 7 settings available. The factory setting is 2 from the bottom. Try the next one up. I weigh 95kgs which is about 210 pounds and have found the 3rd setting to be just about right.
