Stator failures ?
Stator failures ?
Has anyone had a stator fail on their hawk ? All i have ever had or read about about is RR failure. I have two of my riding buddies that had their stators fail on their 04 v-stroms for the 3rd time. Both have about 65,000 miles on them.
Mine has not failed but when the engine was being rebuilt (last fall; engine has about 85,000 miles at the time), the tech showed it to me and noted a few areas which could become problematic. He suggested it would likely be wise to change it before too long. I just ordered a replacement unit from RM Stator ("local" outfit out of Ayre's Cliff, Quebec) with an eye to replacing it over the winter. Hopefully the aftermarket unit will up to the job......
Constant charging problems for all of 2010 with ambiguous diagnosis. Hair pullers were, in order, 1) Defective new R/R from e-Bay, 2) Defective new battery, 3) Hidden corrosion on the ground strap to the engine block, 4) Weak stock stator that tested okay.
In four decades of motorcycling the only constant was a constant wish for a bullet proof charging system.
Replaced it all with parts from Electro Sport, including the five-pin plug and so far its been good to go. Knock on Wood.

I just finished replacing the stator on my friends dl650.The stator windings were ok, but the connections where the wire harness was crimped to the three stator windings were toasted. It uses a small butt end connector with a small sleeve insulator to seperate the splices. The wire harness was brittle and crumbled about 3 inches beyond the splice. It could have been repaired but he already had the new oem stator. Now I (we) know what we may find if our stator ever fails.
