Speedo sensor

Hello everyone I have what seems to be a simple question?
I purchased the hawk with a broken speedo cluster I purchased new one from ebay installed and now have all the functions besides a speedometer itself. I would think to now replace the speed sensor, but why does my tachometer work?
Don't they both run off of the speed sensor?

The short answer is no. Think about this, how would the tach know the engine speed if the bike is not moving?
If you go to the Knowledgebase section, you will find a link to download the factory service manual. Speed sensor is @ the front sprocket. It is a replaceable part with a white plug at one end.
