Showa OEM shock rebuild
Ok guys, finally I was able to put together my prototype shock enough to get a few pictures of it. What is shown is just the replacement for the CBR's lower clevis. The adjustable part would thread into the bottom.
Replacement lower clevis parts. The red **** is now the rebound adjustment

jamie, i have an OEM shock I took off a my '88' 1000cc hurricane before I sold it. Are you familiar with it and if so, would it be useful to mod my superhawk shock or could it be modded to fit?
what is this latest shock you have pics of above?

Now, that is pretty... I'd sell my soul for that...No, you won't want to use that shock. Your stock VTR shock is better!
The shock shown is from a CBR600F4.
I'm hoping to get the adjustable ride height worked in as part of the conversion, that will really add some icing to the cake!
You can pretty much think of it that way. For the street I think you'd be hard pressed to notice much of a difference. I've ridden Ohlins rear shocks on the street and track and I can say that a for me a Showa with RaceTech internals performs just as well.

Oh boy, we are past that point - this has been a go for about four months now. I've been sending out converted CBR shocks to fit the VTR pretty regularly. In fact, I can convert other shocks besides the F4, I'm working on a CBR600F3 for a forum member right now in fact. The F4's are a good choice because they offer good performance and quality and can be purchased cheaply on eBay.
Yes, the F4 and F4i shocks are identical. Don't get hung up on spring color either, Honda put a red or yellow spring on there only to match the bodywork color - the springs rates are the same.
OK, so I send you an f4 shock & what are the conversion prices. You can email me @ englatona @netzero.net. I believe its one price to convert & another for race tech. This is only for the street so I may not need RT. Thanks
The adjustable ride height version has still got some work to do. The costs are too high right now, it would put the conversion over $200 without the cost of the spring. I'm still working and have some ideas, hopefully in the next month I'll have something. If anyone has an F4 shock to send over I'll be happy to make sure they are the first to get this done to it!
Possibly, I've not gotten to that point yet. I've got a WP on my bike that was originally for an R6. It has the reservoir mounted in a similar fashion to the 929's and 954's, so there is a chance that it would work. The actual modification would be a little different that what I've shown on this thread - the extension would have to be at the top and not the bottom. I do something similar to the 02+ VFR800's, the next shock I do like that I'll try to get some pictures and post them up.
Just to chime in here, the revised F4i shock is a bit taller than the stock VTR shock. So for those that have shimmed there stock rear shock and plan on getting a modified shock from Jamie, might want to remove the shim when installing the new shock first, see how it rides and then add the necessary shims.
I did not measure the shocks side by side, but I can tell in the seat of the pants that my shock is a bit taller.

My standard procedure is to add 6mm to the length during the conversion. I also have parts for +3mm as well. For no extra cost I can configure other lengths, it would just take an extra week or two.
Well, mine isn't nearly as pretty as Jamie's... but here are some pictures of my DIY adjustable upper mount for the CBR shock... I had it off to paint it...

Not bad, I think it looks pretty good in fact!
So let me ask both Jamie and Tweety this, If I get a F4i shock, have it "worked" by Jamie with a spring to match my weight, and, I don't want an adjustable option, all I'd need to machine up is basically an extended clevis? Similar to Tweety's version but instaed of adjustable, just thicker at the top to a set length. Correct?
Or is that the other part of your equation Jamie? I guess what I'm getten at is this.
I send ya an F4i shock, I want set length, new spring, "worked", no gold valve stuff? (or is the gold valve stuff part of the "worked" process). How much?
Thanks

The reason I opted for a "custom" option is that since I was doing the swingarm swap the option to adjust rideheight was essential to me and I couldn't wait for the snassy CNC'ed adjustable one...
So I got mine without any extension as I needed the sapce to make it adjustable...

The Gold Valve is not part of the conversion process so therefore it's not necessary. If you wanted just the conversion and new spring the total would be $240.
It's real close, I'm just so slammed with other stuff that I've not gotten around to ordering the parts. I've already prototyped the design on a spare F4 shock so it's pretty much ready to go.
Not stock, I almost never make them the stock length. I typically add 6mm to the length unless instructed otherwise. I have parts for +1mm, +3mm and +6mm shock lengths over stock.
Jamie, is there an option to buy a Kit so to speak, with a spring and conversion clevis, and of course intructions for installation, for those of us who have access to the proper machines, bridgeport, lathe, press. And a way to properly put a nitrogen charge to it.
No, I don't do that. The reason is that I've been burned by that in the past. The person on the other end didn't do something just right and had problems - basically blaming it on me. This is in no way an indication of you or your abilities. I'm sorry that it has to be that way, but it is what it is.
