mcgyver rear amber running lights

I have a 2002 Superhawk and I've been trying to figure out how a previous owner had gotten the rear turn signals to be running lights normally and turn signals when the switch was hit. Couldn't find a splice or diode setup anywhere.

Finally figured it out today and it's actually quite ingenious and simple. He merely rewired the front turn signals so that the turn signal wire was going to ground on the bulb (ie the casing) and ground was going to the contact which was normally the turn signal filament. The running light wire went to it's normal filament contact.

Result was that when the turn signal wasn't activated, power flowed from the running light wire through the bulb casing to the turn signal wire, making the turn signal bulbs light throughout the bike (ie front, rear, and instrument cluster). When the turn signal was activated, current flowed the "reverse" direction from the turn signal wire, through the bulb casing, and out the ground attached to that filament, blinking the associated bulbs normally. The key is that the turn signal switch opened the contact to the other filament in both cases so that you weren't shorting things out.

This meant that the turn signals on the dash were constantly illuminated when not signalling but it's a really easy way to get your rear turn signals to be running lights as well.

I rewired them back to normal but love the lateral thinking and wanted to share. This would work on any bike.
