Just want to double check

I was on my way home from work tonight, and the SH lost all power. It chugged a bit, and then the Tach went to 0 and the bike shut down. There are well over 14 volts being cranked out by the battery. 1st guess while I sat there on the side of the road was the R/R. Before I buy one, I just wanted to get a second opinion.

Its the old stock version, no fins.

check all the fuses, especially the main one. An rr failure will probably blow a fuse too. smell your rr - does it stink, is the connection melted?

14 volts at rest or while running?

Sounds like you R/R failed in the over volt condition, as mine did. However mine fried my battery and no fuses.. Yours seems to have popped one of your fuses.

I bet your 30A fuse is blown, so replace that.. And then do the R/R test as outlined in the manual. (downloadable from the Knowledgebase here on the forum)

Pulled the R/R first, and found this. I believe the main fuse popped to, but didn't pull it yet!

If your fuse is blown, you are lucky. Look in KB for RR replacement threads, many options to get you back on the road soon.

Ohmmeter will do the trick, as will swapping it for the spare that is kept right next to it.

I only have a 20 and a 10 spare, no Main 30...

The 30A main fuse is separate from the rest of them.

On the left side of the subframe. 17-0 in the manual shows it. (page 317 of the PDF)

Friendly reminder - do not try to start the bike once the fuse is replaced until you sort out your RR issues. You might waste something else. You can turn it on, just do not start the engine.

Well if he leaves the R/R unplugged i'd think it would be ok.. unless that is bad for the stator?

That's perfectly fine... Unplugged R/R means not charging, but the stator doesn't know/care... It's a good way to test stuff...

Actually it's a decent way to "load test" a battery...
