a jump in first?

So ive had the Shawk for almost 2 weeks now and have done nearly 1k miles already (and going to the track next weekend). Im still learning the personality of the bike and everything is good so far. But every once in a while, while riding in first gear, i get a little jump/surge then everything is normal again. i know some bike just hate first, is this one of those, or do i have a problem to deal with?

Sounds like the carbs aren't dialed in. From your avatar it looks like you have aftermarket high mounts. If the carbs haven't been rejetted, you're probably running lean. What's happening is you're getting a lean surge or carb backfire, probably at 3500rpm or less. Even stock exhaust has that problem without some carb work.

If it runs fine otherwise, you can just shift up past the problem, or pull the carbs and see what, if anything, has been done to them. There's a ton of info about carb work if you do a search.

Good luck. And have fun on your Hawk.
