Help--broke off plastic choke fitting on carb

Hey Guys,

I broke off the threaded plastic starting enrichment valve (part of the choke assembly) that goes into a carb when I was rejetting. How do I get the threaded piece out and fix the choke?

order a new choke cable assembly. about 30 bucks:
Honda, ATV Parts, Scooter Parts, Motorcycle Parts,CRF,CR,MX Parts, Goldwing parts

DON'T try anything that could result in damaging the carb body choke threads. they are aluminum and, therefore, easily damaged by something steel (e.g. vice-grip rubbing against threads).

it depends on how close to the carb you broke it off. if there's some plastic sticking out, you should be able to snag onto it with some small long tipped vise grips and screw it out. you probably already have the airbox off so that you can get to it. if it's broken flush, you might be able to wedge something into it and back it out (make sure the choke needle isn't in there cause you don't wanna jam that into its orific).

good luck.

You don't need a whole assembly, you really can buy just that plastic threaded collar - it costs less than $5. I'm trying to find it on the fiche, and so far I can't, I'm sorry - but I have done exactly what you did, and was able to get it from ronayers.com for practically nothing plus $5 shipping. Maybe give ronayers a call and they might be able to help you find it.

Hint: use the fiche at babbitsonline.com, they have much higher quality images than the others.

As for getting the broken off part out, take the carb out, and then use a sharp jeweler's flat screwdriver against the broken off edge, and nudge it counter-clockwise. Once the collar is broke off, it's not tight, it's just sitting in there. You could probably even get a couple of sewing needles and put the points of each into opposite sides of the broken off edge, and then just turn.

Ok, I may be wrong - it may be that it only comes as part of this:

Honda VALVE SET, STARTER

Part Number: 16046-MBB-640
Price: $23.39

It's labeled 11 on the "Carburetor (Component parts)" fiche. For that much, you're better off buying the used choke assembly that the guy above is offering, because then you'll get two of those collars, and they're pretty easy to break.

When I broke off the booster valve in the carb intake I was able to use a star headed screw driver easily wedged in it and screwed it out.

If it is the part I am thinking of there is a polaris atv replacement made of brass that is a better replacement.

Man, I've done that a bunch of times. I'm not sure why that assembly is so fragile. I guess I'm the same person who complains when parts are too heavy too - never satisfied.

Large EZ-Out GENTLY pressed in. You don't want to damage the aluminum threads.

as a matter of principle I might try to take the piece out and then superglue it back on somehow. 30$ is just silly!

A small pick or awl in your case would be the only way I could see doing it. If you get REALLY desparate, take the small pick or awl and work one of the edges in until you can gain enough purchase to grab that ear with some needle nose pliers or a hemostat.

You probably should have stopped for a break and had a beer, then you wouldn't be in this mess.

Nice. One of the objectives of this entire maligned adventure was to make the carb sync mod and sync the carbs. I dont think I can do that with one enricher turned up.

if it broke off, it defaults to the close position so as long as you dont pull the button it should be fine.

I just use a small screwdriver to slowly turn the broken piece out. Yes, I've had to do it a couple of times myself! Those darn things break way too easy.

Good luck!

They do, so while I was on leave a few weeks ago and one broke while re installing the carbs, I spent an hour on the lathe and made a replacement part from aluminum.

Made another one about a year ago from a spare steel bolt I had of the right thread pitch.. drilled, slotted, counter sunk, cut off to length, turned to diameter, and it worked just fin till I got a replacement plastic part.

As said to get the broken part out,,, if not cross threaded, just use your finger tip, other a flat blade screwdriver works, though unlike Jamie, I use the largest blade one I have, the square edges dig in, grab the plastic and you can unscrew the broken bit out... I've done two that way so far.

Oh and you can get more room to work by removing the cable, pull the spring back, unhook the bell at the end of the cable from the needle valve and separate the pieces.
