Headlights keep blowing

Headlights keep blowing
My headlights blew last night, so I went to the store and got a new one same kind, and it lasted about 30 minutes and then it blew too. What the heck is going on? Anyone have any ideas? Also my fan for the radiator is only working half the time now. I checked the fuses earlier and they all look good.
The bike starts right up and runs fine and all the other lights are working.

I had the same problem when I bought my 98. I was furious when the $22 silverstar blew. I did the R6 R/R replacement that is posted on the forum. Plus when I installed the new bulb I took extra care not to touch the blub with my bare hand as they say the oil can cause problems. I did these things and have not lost another bulb since. Also interesting is that I was having trouble with my fan too. That has resolved as well. I noticed when i was riding that sometimes the headlight would seem brighter than other times. It was like the power would surge through the system. You should do the check that superbling mentioned to confirm.

Ok I tested the volts.
1st test: 13.4v with the bike off and 17.8v when running at idle and throughout the rpm range.
2nd test after riding for a bit: 13.6v when off and 14.8v when running throughout the rpm range.
Does this help anyones diagnostic?

It should be 15.5v MAX!
Your r/r (regulator rectifier) is bad. Stop running the bike as it can do more damage. Hopefully your battery is still OK.
TONS of info on r/r's here. Welcome to the club (mine was 18v).

I have to ride it a few miles tomorrow, it is going in the shop for an oil change and tune. I called them about the r/r and they said it would be 170 freaking bucks. Dennis kirk has one for 100, should I buy one like this or convert it to a different brand one?

Well if you have to, you have to. Run the high beam the whole time. DK isn't going to be the Honda item but you probably know that. It will be plug and play tho'.
Using yamaha r1/r6 or gixxer units are popular mods because they last and much cheaper used but require splicing or re-wiring. Look in the knowledge base forum for how-to's.
Good luck.

Ok I am pretty sure the battery is fried. Smelled like rotten eggs and then was dead this morning. I have a new RR coming in today, will go buy a new battery later. Hopefully this will fix my electrical problems. Thanks guys for your input.
