ENGINE TICKING HARD

ok so i just bought the 98 with 20k on it 2 weeks ago froom a guy i know that babied it.. Its been runnin nice n quiet until 2day, i was runnin down the freeway @ 80ish when i heard some noise. So i pull over n it doesnt sound like a knock, just a real hard ticking. It doesnt stop at anytime, but the sound kinda fades at around 4k rpm. Please help

Did you check your timing? Maybe just valve clearance?

smk2mch87 May 1, 2011 01:33 PM

havent checked anything yet, rode 2 my buddys house, he said it sounds like a bent valve. its def coming from the front jug

nykuryu May 1, 2011 01:53 PM

well if its a bent valve then i dont think the noise would go away. i assume you havent done the MCCT upgrade yet?

smk2mch87 May 1, 2011 02:39 PM

no i havent done mcct yet, its comin now tho, n the noise isnt going away at all, just kinda fades away maybe b/c its reving so fast i cant hear it as well. can u tell me how to check the cct and timing?

RWhisen May 1, 2011 02:44 PM

I wouldn't start or ride it until you investigate the valves.

well first pop the little round cap on the stator cover off. that will give you access to the crank bolt (turn counter clock wise). then get that little cap right next to it off, that will let you see the timing marks. then take the valve cover off so you can see the cams. now turn the motor over til you see FT in the little cap hole and line up the lines. now look at the cams. you should just be able to see above the surface of the head FE and FI on the outside edges of the cams.

k ima dig into it this week, and no im not starting it anymore lol

smk2mch87 May 1, 2011 04:18 PM

oh 1 more ? does a 98 have adjustable valves? im thinking of caming it since i have to strip her down

nykuryu May 1, 2011 05:06 PM

like adjust the cam timing? no it doesnt.

smk2mch87 May 1, 2011 05:14 PM

no im sayin like when u put in performance cams u have to grind down ur valves usually unless theyre adjustable, oh well i dont think ima have the money to do it after all this nonsense

smk2mch87 May 3, 2011 06:52 PM

ok so i got mcct's yesterday off krieger out of ohio. he is the man n knows his stuff. put em in today and when i got to the front cyl i pulled the cam cover and noticed i jumped probably around 10 teeth. thats why it was hittin so hard. ive adjusted everything n got the cover back on... sounds like everything is right again. Havent buttoned everything up but will tomorrow n see how it sounds when running, but when i turn the motor it sounds gnarly. thx to every1 who helped with advice n deff thx 2 krieger cct's

nykuryu May 3, 2011 07:30 PM

dude if you jumped 10 teeth you probably bent some valves bro

Where can I get a dependable head gasket set and gaskets. I'm about to do a head swap

Get them through a dealership. Should be about 30 bucks a piece, genuine Honda. 8541 has a link for cheap Honda parts. Either pm him for it or search around. He's posted it recently

smk2mch87 May 4, 2011 04:53 PM

nvrmmind the last post my gasket is shot in several places, this is a shitty project when things dont go the way u want em to

klx678 May 5, 2011 01:44 PM

If everything worked out, the last thing I'd be complaining about is a damaged or wasted cam cover gasket man!

Glad to hear it appears to have worked out. Gimme a call, let me know for sure.

smk2mch87 May 5, 2011 05:15 PM

rvt'd the whole gasket, thatll get me through til thursday when the new gasket comes. other than that the bike sounds n runs great. Feals like a have alot more power after not ridin 4 a few days lol

well thats good. you are among the few that escape motor damage.

smk2mch87 May 6, 2011 06:00 PM

ok well i do seem to have a problem, i did the bafflectomy a few days b4 the ccts took a dump. ran fine minus the carb fart at 3k rpm. ran 140 no prob. today i was finally able to get on it and the bike stumbles at 7-7500 rpms. wont go past that. also my starter has a weird whine when i hit it any ideas on either of those?
