CCT or Carb?

Just got my bike out of the shop for the 32k service and it's still making noise at around 2500 RPM. I'm not sure if it's my old carbs or my CCTs failing, but I thought it was my valves being out which should now be properly adjusted.

It also hesitates or stumbles a bit at full throttle around 8k RPM on occasion, but not every time. Regardless it powers through it and continues just fine.

I figure I'm operating on borrowed time from the CCT discussions I've read here. I've got 38k on the bike with original CCTs in it. It's a stock '98, with a now rebuilt water pump after both seals went last month.

I'm guessing I should replace the CCT regardless, and maybe throw some carb cleaner through it for a few tanks. Any advice is appreciated.

I guess it's a good excuse to start wrenching on my bike, which I haven't done beyond oil changes. I read the post on how to replace the CCT's and where to order them. I just need to pull the trigger.

Could be any number of thing's really. Noises are really hard to diagnose without actually being there and hearing it first hand. At 38k CCT's are not a bad idea if you have the time, skill and money.

A stumble at 8k rpm wouldn't worry me at all, not much power to be had after that anyway. But that's just my opinion.

if the bike was just in for service, I would take it back and tell them about the 8K stumble. They should have fixed that as part of the service(they should have cleaned carbs, and sync'd em)

They could also tell you if that noise at 2500rpm is "normal" or not.

i found a video on youtube with audio of a superchicken that sounds just like mine. they replaced their stock CCTs with APEs and all was solved, so i'm going that route. ordered my APEs yesterday for a little weekend warrior wrenching.
I'll have to make a before and after video.

just be sure to rearead the instructions and listen for a click when you remove the stock CCTs.. if you hear it, DON'T start the engine till retiming the cams. If you don't hear it, you are good and it will be a quick easy job. (in other works make sure you have no pressure on valves when CCTs are removed)

i'll be following the instructions on the KB forum and zip-tying my cam chain to the sprockets, but thank you for the advice.
it's a good excuse for me to crack things open and become more familiar with my bike.
