Question Bogs out at 7k RPM

Hi all.

I have an interesting err

I bought a VTR 1000 Firestorm 2000. Drove wel and throught the rev range but slow, but lazy not that big bang everybody was talking about. So i check the carbies and found 135 main jets. Got the right jets 185 and wow more power on low revs and pull away now without stalling. But bike bogs ot at 7k rpm.

So check timing. seems fine.

So i take of the top cover of air box and it goes through the revs and with some loads of power first time bike pics up in second.

What seems to be the problem. bike runs great, starts easy.

please advise?

Check the timing isn't 180 degrees out. Easily done if PO has had a CCT failure and rebuilt top end and put it back together wrong as it will run but not past 7k very well.

Hi there.

Thanks for reply

I have checked timing.

My way.

Turn crank up to " R T" then the cams shows on marks IR and ER outwards alighning with head top and cam lobes showing inwards up.

Turn Crank up to "F T" then the cams show on marks IF and EF ouwards alighning with head top and cam lobes showing outwards .

Does this sound right

It can appear fine but it can be still 180 out.

Did you put the filter & airbox lid back on?

yes did do. changed timing back now bike smooth again but stil bogs at 7k rpm. the previous ouk put in smaller jets that made the bike rev through but not so powerfull. with out airfilter bike runs great into red line!

Just dont understand. oem airfilter.

185 jets

air screws 2 turns out. standard needles
45 slow jets.

Have you looked at hawks carb settings and change to match exactly? That could rule out a jetting issue. I'm not very experienced with a issue like this but that can't hurt.

The rear carb has bigger jets than the the front. Whst fuel are you running? What plugs? What condition are they in?

checked everything.

But if i remove the airbox cover leaving the filter in place then the bike goes like crazy to the red line.

what are the correct factory main jet size.

Any chance of a partial obstruction in the snorkel?

People have reported insects and small critters' affinity for lodging in the airbox before.

Unless you're at higher altitudes, the stock main jets are 175 front, 178 rear.

They are 185 and 188.
Could be a Factory pro jet kit installed.

185 188 will be too large if your running a standard filter!!! Start with the plugs and air filter, then move onto jetting to suit. Don't forget to do a carb balance/sync after making any jet changes to the carbs.
