Bike dies when I put it in gear

Hey everyone!

So I have a 1998 frame, 2002 engine, and a 2005 wiring harness/gauges.

I can start the bike just fine, however, when I try to put it in gear, the bike dies. I’m pretty sure this is the kickstand down safety feature. Only problem is - there’s nowhere to hook the kickstand switch to in the 05 wiring harness that I’ve got.

Is there a way to bypass this safety feature? Thanks for any info you can share with me!

I don't believe that a later harness will have no sidestand interlock; they all do. The interlock works by completing a circuit with the stand up AND the clutch pulled in, so if you can find the 3P plug and add a jumper across the terminals (G/W joins to G). You can also jumper the clutch switch wires if that is not making good contact when pulled in.

However, the bike should start in neutral irrespective of the sidestand/clutch switch. Do you get a neutral light on the dash, if not you may not have the neutral wire connected to the motor.

the bike does have the neutral light come on. I think that the previous owner cut the interlock, because I can’t find it anywhere. I’ve tried your advice and it didn’t work. I’m honestly at a loss on what to do now.

I might have confused myself slightly there; what I said was correct with regards to Starting.

However all bikes will shut off in gear and if the stand is down. Its not uncommon to have a bike die intermittently when the sidestand or its switch are loose and bouncing around. If there is no continuity through the switch, you lose ignition. So step 1 for you is to find the sidestand connector which is under the seat in the big rubber sleeve in front of the battery, then either connect it to the sidestand switch, or jumper it as I orignially described.

Failing that, you can find the G/W wire at the ECM and earth that; that is the wire that would normally run to earth through the sidestand switch (up position).

Something else could be that your bicycle simply runs helpless when cold and when you move, the motor gets somewhat more opposition, which is sufficient to cut off. At the point when the bicycle is heated up this ought to be fixed. In any case have a go at changing in to gear in the middle of opening the choke. What's more, let the grasp slip delicately with enough choke so it will not slow down. Or then again turn over the motor with gear drew in and grasp pulled. Also, drive away easily.

Search was my friend.

Cadbury64 for the win!

Saved me a few minutes looking.

Hadn't ridden the Superhawk in quite a while, went to go for a ride this evening and it cut out when put in gear. Took the ZRX instead while I had light.

Got back, looked here, then to the bike. Found that I hadn't fully clicked together the connector under the big clear plastic bell. Connected it, now all is well.

You guys saved me some time and I thank you for that!!
