Another R/R failure and wiring question

I was stranded a couple weeks ago by a rectifier failure. Running along at 80mph one second and coasting to the side of the road the next. Unplugged the R/R and all the lights and replaced the main fuse with the spare 20 amp headlight fuse. Jumped the starter relay with a pliers and managed to limp home. I found a R/R from a CBR 954 for $10 bucks but it has 8 wires (2 red, 2 green, 1 black , and the 3 yellow) to the VTR's 5.
I assume the reds the black and the yellows are the same but I'm unsure about the greens. I'm guessing tieing the greens to the frame would be appropriate but thought someone here would know for sure.
Anyone....Bueller?
TIA
Jeff

I havent tackled this on a bike yet.. but for trucks... mines a hybrid....

I always check continuity of electrical components to see if they are doubled up out of the compnent... that way I know if I can illiminate one...

Read this, should have the answer to all your questions. Just don't use another Honda unit!

Re: Another R/R failure and wiring question

Thanks Guys. I went out to put it together this afternoon and realized I'm an idiot. It's the black wire that's the odd ball on the new rectifier. There is continuity between the 2 greens and between the 2 reds. The black wire is maybe 18 gauge where the others are 14 gauge. I grounded the black to the chassis. When I cranked it up I was reading 16.5 volts. Pretty hot. I'm wondering if this black wire is some sort of voltage sensing wire.. If anybody has any idea I'd appreciate the input.

does anybody know if this r/r will work for the super hawk?
looks beefy but i'm not hot on electrical stuff... so i dont know if it's gonna put out too much power or what.
thanks for the help!

sorry... double post....

You need to find out what kind of connector it has. Many use 6 and FI bikes use upwards of 8 connections.

well the connector looks almost identical... he's supposed to send me a head on pic soon.. i'm more worried about the internals...

do the new honda units have cooling fins?

Mine was easy to diagnose:

I'm going with the updated Honda unit. If I get bad service from that, I suppose I'll look at cobblint. I was also thinking about adding press in vents to the cowling.

Here's the old and new Honda VTR regulater/rectifiers
Haven't had a problem since replacing it with the updated unit.

Re: Another R/R failure and wiring question

An update for anyone searching the archive. I managed to find a wiring diagram for the 954. The black wire is a voltage sense wire and requires a switched 12 volt source to regulate properly. I spliced into the taillight circuit and now have 14.2 vots at idle. Much better.
