1997 air filter
1997 air filter
I am currently in need of a new air filter.....
I went online at ron ayers to look at the fiche, and they have three air filters listed with three different part numbers.
which if for the 97 and is ther a better air box than the one on my bike? is any one of the three better than the other?
also i would love to hear any ideas on spark plugs and whethor or not there is a better choice than the honda specified plug?

I always use the ones that the manufacturer recommends. I am not sure what the difference is between the 3 models offered at ronayers.
I recommend you call your local honda dealer, get some prices and part no. from them.
I just came back from a local dealer, bought 2 spark plugs for SH, two for my ninja 250, an oil filter for SH with a crush washer, the total came about $38 including tax. it would have come up to about $33 from ronayers. Advantage: No waiting, proper parts, can return if it is a wrong part, etc.
my 2 cents.

Re: 1997 air filter
When I was diganosing some carb problems last year I had fouled the plugs and had to get a replacement pair. It took me 2 days (and a trip to a genuine honda dealer) to get them. It seems the number on the plugs from a 97-98 (and possibly) more are NOT the same as the part number the dealers list. If you have any trouble let me know and I'll find the part number. I also had to pay $11 each for them. (OUCH)

Re: 1997 air filter
Never mind all that - make your own Unifilter (Uni don't yet make one for the VTR1000, and when I emailed them about it it sounds like they have no intention of making one).
Buy some foam filter material (Uni, K&N <shudder> or whatever), cut the paper element out, cut the foam to fit, stick it in around the edges with silicon, oil it, and Voila! Woopla! Boing! (whatever...) - a better-than-stock airfilter for a fraction of the cost. Mine cost $NZ35 (about $US1.37) for more than twice as much foam as I needed.

Hope this helps.

Can you say "WOW!!" ? The 'Sturm ran very well for a day or two....
Re: 1997 air filter
interesting idiea about the uni filter thing...
but foam airfilters are the worst air filters you can get....
the foam passes less air as the foam is compresses from the air sucking on it.....
i just am trying to figure out why honda has 2 or three different airboxes on differnt years of vtr...
and is one better than another...? 8)

That's simply not true, and it's not "an interesting idea", it's a practical reality, and works very well.
