1999superhawk super problem
can anyone tell me whats wrong i just purchased this bike only 11,000 miles very clean . my first ride going 140 mph and motor died and rear wheel locked up needless to say i feel lucky to be alive, once i skidded to a stop it then went into nuetral and i pushed it to side of road attempted to restart and it cranked about half a turn then nothing smoke was coming out of tailpipes any answers for a rookie thats afraid of the bike now ?
Well I'm not Gary Rothwell but next time that happens pulling the clutch in rather than riding a locked rear wheel down from 140 to 0 might do wonders for both your longevity and the color of your underpants... I don't mean to be harsh or preach to you but if you're going to take on the responsibility of going 140mph on what is now a 26 year old motorcycle (Christine was only 20 years old when Arnie bought her) you should probably have an idea of what to do when things go wrong. You might also want to make sure the bike is mechanically up to snuff to begin with. Again it's 26 years old. 140 to 0 leaves you a lot of time to make decisions rather than just panic. If you end up in a wheelchair or worse it won't really matter what caused your engine to shut off. Blessings I'm glad you're ok. There are some REALLY smart people on here but no one has a crystal ball. If you're not very mechanically inclined that's ok (you can learn if you want to make the effort). Anything can cause your engine to shut off from running out of gas to a broken CCT or seizing the engine and everything in between. Find a mechanic who know what they're doing and who is versed in older carbureted bikes and let them check it out.

I'm betting an auto cam chain tensioner **** the bed. You're going to need some serious mechanical ability to diag this one. Easiest recommendation, do you know anyone with a bore scope? Pull the spark plugs and look-see down in each jug. I'll bet front has some bent valves that kissed piston. At that speed/motor load, this doesn't sound good.
Did you find out what it was. Did you hear any noise while trying to stop? Mine wasnt going 140 mph when the chain gave out but had similar symptoms (beside the smoke), it wasn't expensive to fix. Let us know. Welcome BTW..

No response?!
I'm too old, tired and in pain to suffer fools gladly.
Darwin's theory of evolutionary thinning of the herd may apply here.
Friggin squids make it so much worse for the true believers!
Sorry but I've become, as my youngest says, just a grumpy old man...
And I don't pipe up much but posters like this really rub me the wrong way.
