Nicky in serious condition

If you haven't already heard, Nicky was hit by a car in Italy while bicycle training. Serious head and pelvic trauma. He was put in a medically induced coma today.

What a sad coincidence. Yesterday was the international Ride Of Silence by bicycle riders to memorialize cyclists injured or killed by motorists.

This is ******* terrible. Besides being an amazing rider and a world champ, Nicky Hayden is above all a super genuine cool guy. I really hope he can hold on his life

I guess his condition is going to be kept guarded. Last time this happened (that I remember) was with Michael Schumacher. Not good...

I really hope with all my heart that it's not the case... but a very likely reality of this really is hard to believe or accept. Again, myself, like many others, are hoping for a miracle here... Like I mentioned with the suicide of Chris Cornell (my best friend of 12 years shot himself) I lived through someone very close to me (girlfriend of 2.5 years)suffer a terrible TBI in an auto accident, and now she's confined to a wheelchair, unable to move besides head slowly side to side, barely able to speak (mostly incomprehensible), and unable to move. And it's hard to believe but THAT in itself is a small miracle considering the condition she was in and the chances she was given to even make it through the first few nights... I know it's not mine to say, but I'm not sure I would want to live through something like that, nor do I think I would want someone I love to either... (It was so bad her mother was hoping she would pass that first week).

I got to meet Nicky the year he won the Daytona 200. He signed a "69" hat and a poster for me, which I still have. I continued to be a huge fan of his and watched him win the 200 that year, and go on to triumph on the highest stage in MotoGP. It was really unbelievable... Obviously, besides a brief but also unbelievable couple years with Ben Spies, as an American fan the opportunity doesn't come up very often to watch one of our own winning at that level on the world stage.

I don't claim to know the answer to any of this, why it happens, or what it's all supposed to be about. If nothing else I guess it makes you appreciate what you have, while you have it. And if you haven't told someone close to you how much you love them, even if you have a damn good reason, maybe think about doing so and spending a little more time with them. I guess even if you have experience with this sort of thing with a loved one it's still especially cruel to see this happen to someone larger than life like Michael Schumacher, Randy Renfrow, Nicky Hayden and so many others...

Maybe this time we'll get a happy ending... Miracle DO happen, like Kenny Noyes. I hope one day I can thank Nicky in person for all the excitement and awesome rides over the years that have inspired us all. More than anything though I just hope his family gets the miracle of having him back as they've always known him.

One of my favorite pics of him. I screen shot it from the Indy race in '13 (I believe).
