I found this when i was browsing polular science's website. These are clearly preliminary reports but it is definately interesting. has anyone else heard anything about these? i know the concept is not new.

Electric motors have retarded amounts of torque over the entire rpm range. You get the same amount at 1rpm as 10000rpm. You'll be very surprised =) Only bad thing is you might get thrown off the back!

I can't wait for these, but fear they're going to be out of my budget =/

And on another note.... they're going to have to be neon colored so folks can see you! Cause they sure won't hear you whirr by. I would be tempted to put a go-kart orange flag on one LOL

It would be cool if they only use a small gas engine to charge the batteries then you don't have massivly expensive multi drivetrain cost. There are some cool electric bikes on the horizon.

it's a definate step in the right direction. my only gripe is that the fantastic symphony coming out of my exhaust will be a thing of the past. hopefully if and when we arrive at the era where everything is electric, people will keep all the internal combustion dinosaurs on the road for the sake of nostalgia. i can't imagine a world where my children never have the chance to appreciate the drone of a cammed up big block or a throaty 1000cc vtwin.

amen to the torque factor on electric motors. they produce absurd amounts of torque, thats why they use them on the space shuttle crawler.
