what else besides pistons did you replace in the rebiuld...
are they higher compression, how does the bike feel...

how many miles were on the bike

The pistons are also High comp
I have also replaced the exhaust pipes, the front brake line with steel winded ones, Dynojet kit, chain and sprokets (standard size).
I already had a K&N filter an WP front springs.

I did not make a large trip becouse i'm still waiting for my licence plate.

milage was about 22000miles (35000km)

Excelent, thanks for taking the time to 'photo document' the rebuild and giving us a peek inside.

Congradulations on a job well done.

I too have the JE pistons and will be rejetting soon. Can you tell me your experience with the jetting - i.e. jet sizes , needle positions etc.

wow, 22k and it needs an overhaul??? WTF. What about all these vtr that have more than 50K and never needed any major maintenance. I thought these engines should last more, or not?

Its still needs to be driven in and afterworths its goes to the dynabank.
Now its has the jetting witch is on the Dynojet instruction. F 185 R 190 and the needles on 4 (K&N filter and open exhaust)
Dyna results will be posted here!

This was by the way the first time I did a complete overhaul of a motorcycle. Learnd mutch.

That's the overflow tank missing the cap in that pic. The main cap is ontop of the right side radiator.

Hey,

I've went to a dynobank and this is the result:

116.8 rear weel Hp!

The red line is when I richen my needles, helps the dip at 4200 rpm but screws the top!

Awesome!

I've also heard that these pistons also do a great job with torque. Did you get a read out for that?

I would like to have the mori cams but a little expensive for me right now.

I've asked for the dyno print with torque curve and I'm hoping to get it next week.

I'm bloody impressed! Thanks for the pics - now I know how much trouble I'd be in if I had as much spare time as socialists do.

Re: Installing 0.5mm Oversize JE-Pistons

Great documentation. I'm noticing a lot of oil consumption (1 qrt/1500 miles) and have been wondering if this was the solution. A lot of work, looks like, and probably not cheap either. But it must feel like quite an acomplishment. My bike's got 40K miles on it - dive in?

I'm not interested in boosting compression or topping out the performance - should I go with OEM parts, or are aftermarket parts made to tighter tolerances?

The solution worked! No oil consumption no more!

The Je-pistons were made very nice, tolerances perfect. I think the Honda ones will also be good.
Only I found the costs al little too much for, in case of the OEM pistons, having a standard bike after all the work.

Although the oversize JE psitons are not cheap!

Anyone know how to figure out the displacement increase with 0.5mm oversize pistons?

You could order vinyl replacement number decals of the new displacement ,
ala exotic Ducati 851,888, etc

Re: Installing 0.5mm Oversize JE-Pistons

It has taken me about 8 hours to take the engine out of the frame,
1 day (8h) of desmanteling the engine.
It has been away about 2 weeks for the bore.
1 day engine reassambly and 1 day taking it back into the frame.

Costs: 4 pistons: +/- €800
bore: €200
gaskets etc: +/- €250

engine desplacement: bore² * pi/4 * stroke * 2(#cil)

thats 995,6712429 for the standard VTR bore 98 stroke 66
and 1005,857072 for the 98.5 bore
makes 1006cc not so great number for decals i think. (if it was 999 I would concederate it!)

These are custom made pistons by JE-Pistons.
They costed me €800 to get them to belgium. (4#)
