Fork in the road - go stock or make 2Bros carbon work?
Fork in the road - go stock or make 2Bros carbon work?
Howdy Folks,
Been doing some reading/searching on carbs, jets, and aftermarket exhaust and need some guidance from the "Sages of Superhawk".
*Purchased bike on April 17, 2014
PO's setup:
2BR round c-4 carbon cans
HiflowFiltro Air Filter
Carbs - jetting unknown at the moment
APE MCCTs
The back header pipe has a pipe wrap on it which I will probably remove.
*The Good
The bike starts up every morning, runs fairly well (Idles 1200-1400, mostly stable), and gives me smiles.
*The Bad
However, the exhaust tips are full of black carbon, it smells faintly of gas after a ride, and only gets 25mpg even when babying the throttle around 3.5 - 4.5k for a whole tank.
The left can appears to be warmer than the right can after a ride.
*The Ugly
The bike doesn't want to do roll-on wheelies in 2nd or 3rd, which I believe should be no problem? Also, I feel guilty towards my housemates about the IMMENSE SOUND BLASTING FROM THE PIPES AT 6:30 AM
What to do?
I have the opportunity to get near-mint stock exhaust cans for $80. Should I:
A. Get that stock exhaust, buy OEM jets, and rebuild the carbs and replace plugs?
or
B. Check (or replace) plugs, clean & sync carbs, and see what happens?
I don't do track days or drag races on this bike, just commute to work and maybe joyride in the twisties 3x per month. Which option will be the most straightforward and least expensive to improve MPG and wheelie ability?
Thanks for your time!

I think you may be a little over optimistic in wanting 2nd & 3rd gear roll on wheelies!
I really enjoy wheeling my bikes. Stand up, sit down, etc. Most superhawks will easily power wheelie in 1st gear (stock) 2nd gear is a lot harder! you need to bounce them up really hard, or have a dip or crest in the road. 3rd gear! not going to happen, unless you can bring it up to the balance point and change it through the gears. If you want to make it easy just change your gearing, but then all you are really doing is making 1st gear ratio's into 2nd gear ratio's.
If you want to do 3rd gear power wheelies you really need one of the newer liter bikes that kick out 160HP plus, even then 3rd gear power wheelies are not as easy as people make out. I perfer to power wheelie my bikes over dumping the clutch. I've always felt it puts less stress on all the moving parts, others think differently.
Good luck, let see what over members have to say? I will say one thing the superhawk is a really nice bike to wheelie, has a pretty low balance point, its much better if you can do stand up wheelies, as then the balance point is even lower, and you can control it for a lot longer, more easily.
Ride safe!.....when wheelies go bad! the bike tends to flip or cartwheel really easy! don't ask me how I know!!!! LOL.

Personally, I would treat the cans and the jetting as separate decisions. They really don't affect each other enough at the "slip-on" performance level for it to be a deciding factor. Your 2bros biggest performance gain comes from being about 7lbs lighter and the noise that accompanies them (whether or not that is good). Maybe a hp or two, but nothing that will make wheelies easier or harder!
People are just talking about packing the mufflers in another thread. If yours is getting worn out, some new filler will make them quieter. If you want real quiet (and heavy) grab those stock ones and make a few bucks selling the 2bros.
First thing would be to get into the carbs. You really can't make much of a decision if you don't know what you have. They could be dirty, out of sync, have a jet kit, or some other unknown. Possibly grab the supplies to do 8541Hawk's carb setup while you're in there to set up a baseline.

You're right about weight, and I personally like the 2Bros sound, it's just very loud for some folks.
I've never needed to replace any rubber carb parts other than the carb boots at the cylinder. YMMV, but most likely you won't either. Anything that shouldn't touch cleaning fluid can be removed before said cleaning.
One other thing I noticed: the airbox cover says "California Vehicle" yet the PO apparently removed the Evap canister from the front of the bike. I wonder if that's got anything to do with this?
