Dynojet swap for Factory Pro jet kit

OK, I bought a 2004 SHawk from my local dealer, and as part of the deal, they were going to put slip-ons and a jet kit in it right after it passed break-in. I asked for Erion slip-ons because I love the way they sound, but didn't know beans about jet kits (I came over from the fuel injected world) so I let them put in a Dynojet Stage 1.

I haven't been at all pleased with the dealer's support on tuning the bike since I've gotten it home ("yeah, we can fine-tune the carbs, but it'll take lots of time and lots and lots of $."). And to be honest, the Dynojet kit really doesn't feel any different than it felt stock during break-in. I'm sure the dealer just picked the closest-to-oem jets...anyway, the engine stalls if I pull the clutch in while revs are anywhere above 2,000, the bike has a nasty surge to it when accelerating from about 3,200 when it's hot (welcome to Tampa!), and overall, I know I can do better. Oh, and many times when it's warm and idling at a light, the engine just stops. (The TPS has been checked and re-checked to be correct.) On the plus side, I'm getting better than 40 MPG on a bike that the reviewers all said was doing good to get mid-30s....

I got a shiny new Factory Pro jet kit, and after several adjustments, more times of yanking/tweaking/re-installing carbs than I can count, and many hours on the phone with Mark at Factory...I've finally learned that the Dynojet kit requires a shorter slide spring, and an extra set of holes to be drilled in the bottoms of the slides. Of course, my Honda dealer doesn't have my original springs.

Since the Factory kit is designed around the oem springs (and non-extra-holed slides, but I can fix that with superglue), I'm trying to find a replacement set of springs, but they've been on backorder for some time now. If anyone has a set that they're willing to part with, drop me a line. I can either pay cash, or trade you a slightly used set of Dynojet springs, jets, and needles...

Hopefully my frustration can save someone a headache with their own bike.

Re: Dynojet swap for Factory Pro jet kit

I have never had the factory pro kit, but my dynojet kit works fine. I'm sure its just a difference in how much time and knowledge went into installing it. I bought my 98 used from a guy who I suspect had enough money for whatever he wanted. because I keep finding things on the bike that suggest it used to have stuff it doesn't have anymore. the jet kit, tuned for aftermarked pipes was discovered when I had the carbs cleaned last spring. even though they sold it to me with stockers on it, I left the mixture alone since I intended to get high-mounts anyway. so it ran a little rich and rpm fluxuated slightly. now I have my new pipes, and it idles much more evenly. and I have my suspisions about whether or not the forks were modded, cause they don't have the typical SH mush that everybody complains about. kinda on the stiff side actually. anyway, I think the mechanic was the problem here. cause the dynojets can work well.

Your VTR should run a lot better with a Dynojet kit, properly installed.
My advise is if your going down the jet kit route... also upgrade to a freer flowing air fliter as well!
The have the VTR put on a Dyno for correct tuning...(this should be done irrespective of wether you install a new filter or not)!

The dealer either doesn't know what they are talking about or couldn't be bothered helping you, but either way go somewhere else!

Exactamundo!

And since they didn't give me the remainder of the jet kit, nor do they still have any of my OEM parts (so they say), then it's time for me to move on. I've never trusted dealers with my car, and I really had second thoughts about trusting a dealer with my bike....but figured I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.

Then again, I know I"m pretty hard to please when it comes to "my stuff", so maybe I'm being a tad harsh...dunno. I do know the bike has more potential than I'm seeing. So I figured I might as well start from scratch, since this is something I've never done before. After all, the majority of satisfaction doesn't come from having the fastest or biggest....it comes from knowing you did it yourself!

If any of you Dynojetters still have your OEM springs laying around, I'd be more than happy to help you free up a little storage space!

That slimy dealer should have given you back ALL your parts
Both the old OEM stuff and the rest of the jet kit.
(unless you said you didn't want them)

Don't use them again.....they're too flaky !!!
