airbox problems

So opened the airbox for the first time and what do i find a plastic tray with a what looks like is a small k&n air filter glued in to where a stock filler mite have gone so i was thinking of removing the airbox completly and just running cone filters on each carb so wat i would like to know is if this would work good or hurt the bike ????

Anything can work but it isn't worth the time or effort. ;)

autoteach May 26, 2011 07:24 PM

Stock air filter. Do it and love it. You will need to make sure that you have the air foil in the lid.

Jessehawk111611 May 26, 2011 08:12 PM

Airfoil? Im getting carb farts sence i opened it up and i also have exshaust leak where the headers split out for the pipes i neeed did i say neeeeed a new set of headers or at least just the part that the slip on conect to

autoteach May 26, 2011 08:40 PM

Fiche Parts

Look at it, item #9

Jessehawk111611 May 26, 2011 08:44 PM

Dont have that in there and that flat wall looking thing is cut off that right behind it

autoteach May 26, 2011 09:04 PM

Yeah, it comes on the new filter. Order that air foil and all is good.

Jessehawk111611 May 26, 2011 09:10 PM

I think the air inlet is also cut

autoteach May 26, 2011 09:12 PM

eek, can you put up some pictures?

superh1998 May 26, 2011 09:35 PM

If you need one, I have a complete box...top, bottom, velocity stacks, air filter (I forgot what it looks like. I will check tomorrow). Figure $35 shipped, as long as you are in the US.

Jessehawk111611 May 27, 2011 04:29 AM

You wouldnt happen to have a stock header to would youor know of one i can get at least just the pipes that are after where the front and back meet

That's a great offer. My airbox snorkel was butchered by the P.O. so I paid $20+ shipping just for a lid. Anyone with an airbox AFU should jump on this.

No airbox and putting filters on the carbs is a headache
You get wind between the carbs

Same applies to only removing the nozzle form the box.
This causes turbulence in the box and it makes big dip 3-5k.

Taking of the top is possible, but extensive dyno needed.

Best leave box stock, with K&N filter + strip.

Jessehawk111611 May 27, 2011 07:55 PM

Superh i will take you up on that airbox offer pm so we can work out the details and thank you for the help

OK,
I took a look at the filter this morning, and I am not sure what type it is.
It is definitely not a K&N (those have separate block offs for the small filters). I don't think it's a BMC filter, but it does have the built in block offs like the BMC.
The only numbers/letters on the filter are "H61 HM-MBB".
I do not have the small foam filters that go in the airbox, since this filter obviously blocked them off.
Maybe someone else can help identify this filter?
Let me know if you still want the airbox/velocity stacks/air filter.
Thanks,
Mike

MBB in the part number..... Factory Honda part.
You better pick up the small foam filters and install them unless you want to buy a new set of carbs sometime soon..... yes they are that important. ;)

autoteach May 28, 2011 02:10 PM

Agreed Hawk,
They damp the slide movement and not having them leads to premature...needle jet wear. I had to buy a set of carbs due to this (didnt know they deteriorated and disappeared).

superh1998 May 28, 2011 03:03 PM

Thanks guys..I had no idea what it was..this is from a parts bike that I picked up a while ago.

No, this does not "block off" the small foam filters... They are still needed...

When people are talking about the K&N having separate "block-offs" or the stock filter having them integrated, they are just confusing themselfes and others... Those chambers are not blocking anything...

The airbox have an inlet in the bottom, at each corresponding part... The air passes in there, through the foam filter that sites between the airbox chambers, and these chambers, making a loop in the chambers, down into the hose connected just half an inch beside the inlet... These small chambers keep the airbox and the carb vents separate, making for separate pressure... No separation means a bad running bike, and no filter on here means the carbs will literally self destruct...

Just hoping to clear up the confusion for some people...

Lesson Learned...Thanks Tweet.

So those plastic blocks inside the airbox come with the K&N filter? The previous owner of my bike installed one and I'm thinking about going back to OEM. What parts would I have to order? Looking at a parts blow up, I definitely do not have Numbers 9, 17, or 10 anymore.

Thanks for any insight.

9 & 17 should like the picture be mounted to the lid of the airbox... It's fairly popular to remove them...

#10, you should have 2 of this, on the carb vents... No matter what airfilter you have, you really need them...
