520 chain and sprocket 1 down 2 up
I believe the stock is 16/41. You want to go to 15/43, so the final ratio is changing from 0.390 to 0.349.
You will be lowering the final gearing by a factor of 1.12 (0.39/0.349), or 12%. This means you are increasing your rpm for the same speed by 12%. It also means that you will be increasing the miles shown on your odometer (for the same distance) by a factor of 12%.
I will not go to a weaker chain/sprocket (520) vs. the stock 530, as the performance improvements are not worth risking a broken chain. (I don't think you can even notice any gains, and if you are at a level that can notice those gains, what the hell are you doing riding a superhawk?)
I am thinking of just lowering the front to 15, and leaving the rear the same, when the time comes to change them.
Hope this helps.

nope. For some reason, the geniuses at honda found necessary to stray from the hub-mounted speedo unit that worked so well for so long. Ours is electrical, I'm not sure where it's mounted... in the tranny I believe?
Re: 520 chain and sprocket 1 down 2 up
Can/has anyone tried a one down front zero up rear setup? I did that with my Ninja 500 which could handle it. 7% change I think. Some bikes cannot. Anyone?
I'm down 1 on the front, stock rear. The speedo is out worse than factory, so I added a Sigma BC1200 bicycle speedo with the speed sensor attached to the front fork and brake rotor. That thing's supposed to be accurate up to 180, and it seems fairly dead on. As far as rpm change, I'm running 5k at 80mph in 6th, and with the redline almost twice that, it's got plenty of interstate speed. I'm averaging just over 30mpg though, but I don't remember it being that much better stock...
Re: 520 chain and sprocket 1 down 2 up
Yes, that is a common method on the SuperHawk. I've got mine that way, no problems. You will increase your wheelbase to make up for the additional slack in the stock chain. Speedo seems to be more than 7% but the odo is only about 3-4% off compared with my sigma.
Re: 520 chain and sprocket 1 down 2 up
yellr.com sells a speedo box you can adjust to many different gear ratios. That will cure the speedo. I have 2up on the rear and stock front and I love it, plus it makes the wheelbase shorter by a hair. I have also tried the 520 chain conversion and hated it. All I did was adjust it all the time and it wore out in 5000 miles! Anyone want a yellow hawk? My r1 is just to much fun
Re: 520 chain and sprocket 1 down 2 up
Anyone else not like the 520 chain?
From the factory our bikes speedo reads about 10% low, shows 100, doing 110 kinda thing. With the 1 up 2 down it changes 12%, making you bike read 2% high. I would rather think i am going to fast then see blue lights cause i am going to fast.
