Starter Motor Cover

Ever wondered what to do with your old pre mix J.D cans?

I pulled the rubber cover of my starter and was shocked at how much crud and corrosion was under it so I pulled the starter with an idea of cleaning it up.

It was filthy, then an idea hit me! Make a cover for the starter out of an old J.D can, there are plenty available in my garage.

I don't run a chin fairing because of my electric water pump and I don't like the look of fender extenders so the starter cops a lot of crud, so this is what I did.

Carefully cut the ends of the can,

Measured the starter and cut the can to fit,

Cleaned up the starter, it was filthy and the post was corroded so that got tidied up as well.

Then slid the cut can onto the starter body under the horizontal bolts and applied silicon to keep it in place.
Bolted the starter back in, applied liberal amount of silicon on the lead and post refitted the rubber boot and now we have a J.D bike!

Wonder if I can hit them up for mobile advertising!!

As we say here in Oz, a bit wanky but serves a purpose.

I must be getting bored as I am saving up for a USD and have run out of things to do.

That is AWESOME! Quite creative. Man, you putz with your bike more than I do.

Did you pull your starter apart and clean it? If not, it isn't hard to do. Mine looked like yours and when I pulled it apart, it was filthy inside. Lots of cleaner, new grease, and some paint, and she looks brand new. Actually, I posted some pictures a while back...click here (post #12)

There is even starter rebuild kits on eBay for pretty cheap.

I have wondered what those J.D. premixed cans taste like. The stuff inside, not the actual can (I got a funny mental picture of me chewing on a can all happy 'n stuff). I usually just drink J.D. straight and neat.

I had a look inside, it was pretty good, just filthy on the outside and corroded on the post.

Mate, I usually only drink the cans when I go to a party.

They cost $40- Aust for a pack of 10.

My favourite is J.D Single Barrel , but at $100- a bottle it's hexy so I usually have a couple of J.Ds from the bottle and finish off with a single barrel on ice and then I am happy.

Yes you are right about the bike, but I don't watch T.V so most nights I am in the man cave tinkering.

At the moment I am working on a couple of pit bikes for something to do.

The Chinese one is a piece compared to the Jap One.

Anyway I only posted the J.D starter for a laugh, will leave it on and see how it goes.

I used a NO2 power aide drink can and did the same thing, you would not believe the hard looks it gets.

I got a good laugh. I like it, but please don't put tassels on the bars.

At the prices you pay it might be worth it.

With all the porn on the internet I think it's more common than you think.

I'll bet.

Any issue with the cover trapping moisture against the starter. Engine heat would dry any, but just tinkling.

I get some funny comments from time to time about it.

It is still in place and is now peppered with marks from the stones thrown about by the front wheel as I have been on some dirt roads recently.
