Replacing rectifier

When replacing with a mosfet rectifier, is it necessary to keep the mounting bracket from the original? The holes line up with no problem without it. Why is it there? Some sort of heat buffer?

What bracket are you referring to?

I've seen that "bracket" you speak of. It is more like a heat sink for the original R/R. Just toss it in the bin and drill new holes for the new R/R if needed.
