Naked VTR
Anyone have any pics of a VTR with just the front fairing removed, leaving the headlight and gauges intact?
Been pondering this look on mine for awhile, just not super pysched about pulling the fairing off and then putting it back on without cracking anything. |

Sorry, meant the stock gauges and stock headlight. Looks like all the colored fairing pieces would come right off around it all.

The headlight is mounted to the fairing via 4 bolts. If you were to take off the plastics the fairing stay bracket and guages would stay but the headlight would stay with the plastics...
I'm going naked because towards the end of last season I wrecked my bike and f*****d up the plastics... I'm making a custom Headlight from the bixenon internals of a BMW headlight and some custom bodywork in the form of a belly pan and radiator shrouds. |
If you go to the members rides section there are a lot... a ton of naked VTRs on this site and many good writeups for their builds...
In the cosmetic mods section you'll find various gauge assemblies retrofitted as well as headlight assemblies... There's also writeups and info regarding options instead of having the side mount radiators... |
It is fairly simple to remove the whole front fairings... 4 fairing bolts 2 on each side, 4 mirror nuts. You may or may not have a small bracket on the insides where the radiators are, displace that. Pull the whole thing forward about 6 inches and unplug all 4 lights and then pull the whole thing off and your left with the fairing stay and gauges... good luck

I understand perfectly well what you're after... here's an old photo floating around on the innerwebs for a long time of a black VTR as you describe. I like the look. So much so that when I suffered a mild crash, I ran it like that for a few years. Mine is the red one. Light and surround held on with four heavy duty zip ties, what else?

it is just zipped tied on so I could go riding, it would take some modding to make permanent. The side fairings suppose to hold headlight and center fairing in place

I just joined the forum today...and am wondering how to post a new thread? I had turned my SuperHawk in a "streetfigher"... I removed the entire front fairing, made a custom aluminum bracket that bolted to the forks, and mounted a FatBob headlight assembly (I like the FatBob light, because high and low are both on no matter what). I'm looking for interest to sell the assembly. I went partially back to stock. Trimmed the fairing, and put on ProTaper FatBars.... anyone interested? I can post pics...(if I can figure out how!!) thanks, smredrider73

SharkSkinz offers a headlight mounting bracket that will mount the headlight directly to the front subframe. It is a couple of pieces of aluminum bent/welded properly for an easy fit, you just have to drill a couple of holes.
That said, it would be very simple to DIY with some aluminum, a vice, a drill, hacksaw, file, and a few eyeball measurements. I want to make sure you are aware of that option in case someone wants to represent that buying a kit with all the hard work done for you is a stupid waste of money. They're $42 now, I think I paid $30. Me, a couple hours on Saturday are easily worth $50, so pulling something out of a box and bolting it up is worth it to me. Did the windscreen need to be trimmed to work like that? I dont have the VTR in my possession yet to have a look, due to extraneous circumstances, will be picking it up next week. Also, do these bikes overheat more with the side fairings removed? |

This is my effort in a sort of "cafe racer" with straight bars. I am using the same rev and speedo gauge that was originally on this bike, with a compact nose cone faring to hide the wires. At 63, I need to make my rides a bit more vertical because being in the crouched position is only good when you are 36, not 63. I went with the radiator under the seat but it is not to my satisfaction. The fans kicks on good, but will not cool the antifreeze in the radiator efficiently enough. It won't drop temperature, it gets to 220, and slowly increases. I put a ram air device to try to help it, but had no success. Just a hot ass. I will be going back to the original radiators with another type of modification yet to be determined. |

That looks great !! It seems like the person who did that project, had money and time. I love the way this bike runs....but it is old and I try to do modifications that are not too intense. I have upgraded the stock forks, with a brace, spring modifications and 4i brake calipers. Did put a Nitro Rear Suspension and a brace on the swing arm. The engine is upgraded....stage II cam, high compression pistons....but mainly my time is the biggest expense.
I have taken this bike on the track....before the fairing was removed, and it handles and performs far better than my ability allows....not that I am going slow....I am not the last guy in the intermediate group. If you go crazy with modifications on this bike....you will not recover your money on the sale of it....and at that point, the bike is a keeper.....and mine is. |
