Naked first step?

I'm thinking about going the naked route with the Shawk, but I don't know what my first step should be. If I just pull off the front fairing will it be rideable until I can figure out what headlight I want to put on it, or will the headlight and instrument cluster just be a soup sandwich when I tear off the plastics? Ive really been digging the naked look on bikes for a couple years now, and Ive gotten to the point where its either repair a big crack in the right side fairing from the PO, or go naked.... and Im leaning naked.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

looks a little strange w/no changes, but totally rideable. I rode mine around ratty like this for months.

Disregard the bent clutch lever. I, uh, tried to convert it to a shorty by not using the kickstand...

Birds nest of wires, but hey, gotta crack a few eggs....

The first step to making a naked is to crash your bike...

Fix the fairing!

Ok, so now that we've established that it is rideable without the front fairing, what are the low cost options for making it look good after the fairing is gone?

That highly depends on available time, tools, mechanical ability, and personal style! I mean, by taking the fairings off you are already downgrading to some people...

Plenty of VTR fighters on here to look through, some really inspirational stuff.

Also, there's this:

Alrighty, I looked through all the albums at the fighters and I have totally committed myself to the naked shawk thing. I wanted to ask anyone who has gone naked if they had to fabricate a headlight mount or if some headlights come with some kind of mount. Even something as simple as what calisuperhawk has in his album would be great. Any advice is welcome!

I like how his top triple is black, is that stock on 02 hawks? or some year hawks at least? I'd be interested on how to do that , maybe a powder coat??

Since the upper is off a 929, it came black.

I have a set of headlight brackets I picked up off of ebay. They can be used with any 7" round headlight. I'll sell them to you for $20 plus actual shipping.

I think any parts of the stock setup used in the naked version look like crap. You can make yourself a couple of headlight mounting ears from flat strap in about 20 minutes, buy a headlight on ebay, and bolt it on. The wiring will have to be cleaned up (and shortened) to fit with the new lights. And you will probably want a new gauge cluster, as the stock one looks really bad with a naked setup. Koso, Veypor, and Acewell all make replacements that work. Here is mine, and has the prerequisite, "I was wrecked" creds

Ok, so my naked conversion is officially underway. I have stripped off all the gear from the front of the bike and I am now waiting on the replacement parts. Good times right? I would take pics of the work in progress but it is about to storm like crazy for the next 2 days. If anyone expresses any interest Ill put up pics on Monday. Thanks for all the support and words of encouragement, as well as the pics to keep me motivated.

Picks are sometimes cool and may be useful for you. I've posted pics before without any real motive and had forum members point out troublesome/unusual things that I didn't notice.

Camelninja, how's it going? I'm considering doing this also, mainly due to a bent fairing bracket. My bike has a slight tweak to it if you look at it from the front, and the mirrors aren't symmetrical. I've always been interested in doing a gradual/economical naked conversion.
