Luggage rack
So, I did the around lake superior trip from milwaukee wisconsin area. Last time i did a long trip i strapped a backpack to my tail. It wrecked my plastic, so I made a pannier rack for my bike. Probably the single greatest touring mod any one person could make. I will post pics when I get a chance.

how did you attach it?
|
I went off the rear passenger peg mounts. Eliminating two up riding, but if you are touring, its impossible anyway. The way I made it allows for it to tip up and allow the seat to come off so you can get at the underseat area without tooling. I have refinements that I am going to make, but I think that it would be very marketable for those who like to travel Sport touring style. I used the cortech bags and they worked awesome. I also didn't lose much in the way of handling. My bike is a little on the custom side, so I will have to use my buddies to make ones for the general public. Like I said, I will get the pictures up as soon as possible.

This set-up allows me a 52 liter top case (givi maxia) that easily holds 2 helmets, along with 2 45 liter side boxes (2 helmets each also) AND my wife.

Oh yeah, that must have been a beautiful trip. The givi stuff is 100% waterproof & pops off to carry into a hotel. I modified a wing rack I had on my CBR600f3 slightly. (Drilled some holes, added some bolts. I also added a brake light in the top case for conspicuity, as well as red LEDs in the turn signalls to give a larger rear signature at night. (not seeing you is #1 on the box jockeys that hit you excuse list)

Smokin;
Can't get your first thumbnail to open. Sounds like you would suggest this CB600 rack as a basis to work from. Would you mind sharing photos and details of the balance of your modifications? |
Nevermind, got the first one open. Do you hang the side bags off of the rack structure in front of and below the rack that supports the topbox?
|
It is a triple rack so the side cases pop onto the "wing" looking things & lock on. The top case in the pic can be popped on the side too. I will see if I can find some more pics that show it. It all bolts to the subframe & passenger pegs. The side cases fit right behind the passengers knees. I will search for a pic.

OK so here is a link that shows how the wingrack looks on a bike(VFR in this link). The rack bolts to the pass pegs & I have mine hanging directly down from the sub frame with flat steel that came with the rack. To make the whole setup narrower I cut the tail plastic so the bags would suck up to the subframe. Now with my E21's (21 liter side cases) I can lane split as the bags are as narrow as the mirrors.

I am going to try to have picks up before tomorrow is over. On my setup you lose the rear seat, but I am pretty sure that touring two-up on the hawk was never what honda had intended. If that is something that you want, you will need to spend the big bucks. As for balance, I didn't have any problems leaning the bike over or manuevering. Top speed became highly drag limited. Sorry for the delay in pictures.

Its ruggedly handsome, jeez. Actually, it got back from superior and only got rode about a handful of times and didn't have the time to wash it. It will get a spring cleaning, as soon as the rear end gets a full update...
