Hey man,

Really cool bike you are assembling and I am stoked that it is being built in the NW! I love everything except for the can and the tank and tail are genius. I have seen that technique performed on the tank before but not with excellent results.

Here is a bike I built a few years ago that resides in seattle.

You can see the style of exhaust I like... Heh

Little_Horse 01-14-2010 12:26 PM

Nice looking bike there. I take it you no longer have it.

As far as the can is concerned, it is just about the easiest part for me to change my mind about and switch. I think once the whole bike is assembled and finished it wont look as goofy. JMHO for now. If things don't look right I am not against changing things.

So I ordered all my parts today. It hurt a little looking at the amount. I bought tires front and rear, a new chain, and four pod filters. Still I am on pace to keep the amount spent for everything bike included at $1100.

trinc 01-14-2010 02:53 PM

$1100 well spent.

what kind of tires can you/did buy ?

I bought Pirelli Sport Demon tires. They are the stickiest tire I could find that was still dot legal. Not alot of choices with the rim size. Speaking of tires, would you believe the rear tire was older than the bike. A true vintage tire, made in 1964 lol, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that today.

Also ordered myself some exhaust wrap. So other than fork seals the parts are done being bought.

So I found the kick start seal is done so its back to the dealer. I have been taking off covers for cleaning and inspection. Here are some shots.

A thin layer of sludge, with some paper particles, like part of a paper gasket. Although truthfully the gasket for the clutch cover looked new and since the kick start seal was bad I have a feeling someone tried to replace the clutch cover gasket instead and was messy with getting the old one off. At any rate it looked like it had been sitting with the same oil in it for years.

Springbubba 01-15-2010 02:31 PM

Whoops....theres my bucket of used oil in the background....lol

Ill give you $1200 for the bike when its done. And you have to deliver it. :)

Engine painted!

Yep, its painted, and basically polished. I have the stator cover to polish then I need to hit all the shiny stuff with a good final metal polish and that is a wrap. The pictures say it all IMO.

Naaaaa it is still mine.... I am attending university in So-Cal and only wanted to take one bike so the KZ stayed.

trinc 01-18-2010 07:49 AM

time to reassemble ! you must be really jazz'd.

any word on the paint ? i'll have to swing by again soon.

tim

Little_Horse 01-18-2010 09:17 AM

I will ask about the paint again today. You should stop by in a week or two, by then I should have it 90% or better reassembled. Considering I still need to paint the rear rim, then have the tires mounted. Also need to service the forks. Those are the more major things to accomplish.

I was pleasantly surprised on saturday when I went to the dealer, not only did they have my fork seals in stock but they also had the kick start seal! That saved me some time since now I don't need to wait a week or more.

I pulled the starter out and sealed off the opening. No reason for me to have it there since I dont have the wiring, the switch, or the solenoid installed. I figure it dropped about another 5 pounds off of the bike. I will have to bring two scales in and weigh this thing dry, I am curious as to the actual amount of weight reduction.

Little_Horse 01-18-2010 05:00 PM

So today I was able to paint the rear rim, and also I was able to install the motor, the swing arm and the lower triple tree. I don't have any pics from today though.

WE WANT PICS, WE WANT PICS, WE WANT PICS, ETC.

nuhawk 01-18-2010 08:29 PM

Keep this worked up CNP. I think you have something that is inspiring in your recent project. It's a great work and it's worth moving forward - a fine example to others. It's also worth completing. Move ahead and Godspeed.

Little_Horse 01-18-2010 08:53 PM

Thanks Nuhawk, it will be finished I promise!

Little_Horse 01-19-2010 10:46 AM

Back ordered parts may slow the rebuild. My tires and chain are back ordered go figure. I will post up a few shots of my progress later today.

So good news, the tank and cowl are now primered up, the guy painting it says he should have the pearl white on it this week. When he does I will try and get a shot for everyone before the stripe goes on.

Started taking the forks apart, eyuck it was bad looking oil. Looked like it had separated. Anyways I polished the fork end and painted the tip. Heres what it looks like.

Well both forks have been serviced with new oil and seals. Later I will put the headlight brackets and clip on's on and its beginning to look like a motorcycle. Bring on the tires!

Where did you get the mirrors?

They where on ebay, pretty cheap like $20, the mirror assembly is great for the price, the mounting bits are cheap though. We shall see if they hold well. I have heard mixed reports. My work buddy has them on his hurricane and they seem to be fine were as hawkrider couldn't get them tight enough.

Electrical

2 Attachment(s)
Yep, gotta sort the electrical now. Its a little bit of a project considering I dropped a whole switch assembly that used to be the throttle assembly. See I shortened the throttle holder so it would fit on my bars, this got ride of the hi low headlight switch the kill switch and the starter button. So now I have to bypass all that stuff, so the headlight will skip the switch and the kill switch needs to be bypassed too.

Attachment 27985

I also am having to make battery hook ups since the battery is all the way in the cowl. So I made a new frame grounding point and new positive lead that will get hardwired into the original harness. The trick with everything is to not see it, still working on that but I don't think I should have trouble accomplishing that.

Attachment 27986

lazn 01-21-2010 10:11 AM

At some point it is easier to start over and not use the old harness at all.
