Re: My BRAND NEW 2001 Super Hawk

So a tire question for you. Back before I sold the Yamarocket, I used Dunlop D204's exclusively, and LOVED them. In fact, I was mad when they went out of production and I had to buy D207's.

All I read now is people talking about how bad the 204's are. Have tires come that far in the last few years, or is it just all hype? Are the Honda spec 204's any diferent that what I would haver bought back in 1999-2000?

Where the heck did you find a brand new 2001???? You must have got it at a great deal. Yes 204s are nothin spectacular and yes the new rubbers came a loooong way since 2000. Sounds like you been out of it for a while. try some new Michelin pilot powers or some pirelli diablos and see for yourself. I don't know how agressive you ride but for general strret riding I bet the 204s would do fine but i wouldn't push these tires, especially on cold pavement. I would say break the motor in and ride for about 3000 miles on those rock hard tires to get used to the bike and then upgrade.

Well, I used to be an agressive rider, not so much anymore. I always liked the 204's, and unless they start doing something wierd on me, I'll run em till they are due for replacement, and probably get some D220s.

220s????? Are you sure man? Pilot powers will outlast the 220s and they grip 300% better. I don't know anybody that has 220s on their superhawk. You might make a mistake there.

Actually I'm not sure. That was the result of my initial research. I might have the number wrong, it is the tire that replaced the old D205. I though the Pilot Power was a short life ultra sticky tire. I'll be looking for a tire with reasonable mileage, like I said, i don't really ride that hard anymore.

I'm on the other side of the state from you (near Flint) but I'd like to do a group ride some weekend when the weather is nice.

The pilot pwers are a dual compound tire, they are durable and hard in the middle and very soft on the edges. I have a buddy of mine on an R6 that put 13000 miles on them before he changed them. A lot of riders swear by them and most liter bikes are getting 6-7k miles out of a set. Do some research and forget about the 220s. Old technology. Save your money and get a modern tire, you will get better mileage and performance out of a newer tire. If you want mileage, I would recommend, michelin pilot road, pirelli strada, and the new dunlop qualifiers. Also metzelers roadtec Z6 is a good mileage tire.

The pilot powers sure were'nt a long distance tire for me. I wore out the rear in 1800 miles on my Aprilia Futura along with 2 flats from stones. They were sticky and sure handled good but mileage sucked.

I share your joy. Rolled a brand new blue one out of my truck in Dec. My last one one was a red '01. Had a slew of tires on the red one. For best wear and handling the Michelin Pilot Roads did it for me. Street/Track tires ? I liked them all- they just don't last.

Nice bike everyone knows the red ones are the fastest! If your just doing regular street riding the 204s will serve their purpose. I personally didn't care for them but that's just my opinion and you know what they say about that. I like sticky tires and I'm willing to sacrifice mileage for it but if your not pushing hard with them then it's a waste of money. All tires are shaped differently and have different compounds giving them different feel because of that. I've had a lot of tires on mine and while I didn't like certain things about some of them they all worked well enough. Waste the tires that are on there getting used to the bike and then go buy some good sport touring tires. Oh and the main reason I didn't like the 204 was it's shape and tread pattern, they have a tendency to scalop and vibrate because of that.

Oh and get used to the fuel gauge being where it is right now as well. I'm just jealous the '98 doesn't have all those bells and whistles. Got a clock, a fuel gauge, 2 trip meters son of a.....

Tires on a car...you can put cheapo ones on, and suffice, hell, and even wonder why the hell they make expensive ones. On a motorcycle...it's one of the only things between you and death...get good tires.
