Angry Ethanol in Fuel ruins rubber parts!

Ok I went to mow my lawn and the lawnmower would not run.Went to parts house to get a carb kit and talked to the old Gent there.he says ,you know why youre carb is messed up? It is the alcohol in there 10% and it kills the mileage by 2or 3 MPG too in your car! My friend 98 VTR 1000f was spewing fuel on the garage floor, guess what the darn alky gas messed up his petcock diafram so it wont seal! I dont mind helping the farmers but this is irratating me and I am going to let all know what is happening because it sucks!

A ticked off Tech in Texas!

Old news. Ask anybody with a motorcyle that has a plastic gas tank how they like ethanol in their fuel...the ethanol causes the tanks to expand and deform, my fourth one in less than 3 years is waiting for me at my dealership...

i don't know if it is copacetic, but for the past year or so, i've been adding a mix of stabil and delvac(a small cap full of each) to the ethanol laced fuel we now are being forced to swallow. Got my fuel mileage back and at least makes me feel like i'm doing something to counter the ill effects of burning gmo corn.

superhawk22 is an unknown quantity at this point
Do a search there might be a station that still sells 100% gas, we have 2 here in Gainesville.

Yeah it sucks. Don't let your bike sit too long either. I've been using startron in the gas anyone else use it and have good results? So far so good.

i started with fueltron, no, that's Startron, used the contents of that and it helped fuel mileage by the time i got it finished......and now I fill that bottle with half stabil and half delvac and carry it with me for fill-ups. have to put it in a plastic bag in case it leaks haha.

I'm using Startron...it doesn't keep the gas tank from expanding/deforming, but the bike runs great...

I had to rebuilt the carbs on my lawn tractor. welcome to the club.

Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada

find your state - look for stations.
100% pure gas.

If you find a station that's not listed - you can add it!
help everyone else by pitching in!

Cool. They even have an iPhone app. Sadly, the only listed station for me is at the road race track, 20 miles away.

same here maybe a little more like 30 miles...doesn't do me much good as I am wasting 1/3 of my tank just to get back lol.

my 01 ford expedition runs like **** if I put ethanol fuel in it, so i have to buy premium to avoid it, I may have to check out that startron stuff, I have a butt load of carburated things also

maybe look at the pumps in your area - or ask attendants. sometimes it's there, you just have to look for it...? then add to the list!

I use Star-Tron or Marine Sta-bil for ethanol (which was derrived from Star-Tron's formula). Had good luck so far.

I put it in my 5 gal cans as soon as I buy it, that way I know it is good for a year, regardless of what I put it in.

I've seen a fuel pick-up in a Stihl saw turn to goo from bad ethanol fuel. 1/2 hour later it was solid again, but looked like a strand of spaghetti.

I just started adding stp gas treatment (small red bottle) into my gas in my tank and wow!!! what a difference it made, seriously I didn't actually expect to see much. but my bike perked up and I just got the most amazing fuel mileage I never saw before 45mpg whats up with that? Oh and no I wasn't careful on how I rode (fact is me and another sport bike were playing 100 a little so I know it wasn't from going slow and easy...my mileage is usually crappy maybe if I was lucky I could get 32mpg before and that is the only thing different I have done to the bike (well other than eliminating those mickey mouse eared turn signals off the front and going flush mount).

oh and thought I should add my bike only has 18790 miles on it.

that's an amazing diff. How much did you add to your tank? When i started using startron, i couldn't get my mileage back until after the bottle was almost gone.

I used about 1/4 of the bottle when i filled up ( it only cost me $1.38 for the bottle at walmart ). And noticed the difference immediately .

Seriously, NJ sucks for getting ethanol free fuel. From what I read wawa has 6-8% instead of 10%.

oh and Nath , I fill up same as always at the same station (my little convenience store ) its a BP station and yes regular gas with (unfortunently) 10% eth in it But its all around here the same percentage.
Oh and the STP bottle says it will do up to 21 gal of fuel . However I didn't bother to worry about the mix I simply poured 1/4 of it in and then add fuel (after all at $1.38 a bottle who cares) lol.

get that **** by the case if it works that good. 45mph is too good, are you sure you didn't miscompute?

Oil helps to prevent varnishing, because the parts are coated with oil, but it does not prevent ethanol from breaking down and attacking anything plastic or rubber.

Stihl has a special oil that claims to help with ethanol fuel. I use it, but I back it up with stabil.

that's good to know. I'm just gonna treat my gas when i get it rather than when i put it in mower, sno blower. chain saw, etc.

I don't know what a capful of delvac is doing, but i've been putting it in my bike gas with stabil for a year now. Seems to run good so far.

thanx

just checked again with another tank of fuel same results. I don't know about all the details of other's mix's and adding all those other products into gas..nor do I claim to know what or if this even breaks down the ethenol in the gas so can't help there either...what I do know is simply that the bike is a lot perkier (especially noticedwhen in 6th gear used to seem sluggish at anything below 80mph now runs good at even 60mph) so more power and more mileage...nuff said for simple me lol

oh thought I might add this too may be important ,may not..but I have no modifications etc (that I know of) to the motor exhaust etc. still all factory.

I never really understood why a bike like ours only weighing in at apx 500lbs would get worse mileage than some dern car weighing in at say minimum 3500 lbs..just doesn't make sense lol , when some get 35- 40 or more mpg would said cars get 100+ mpg if they were stripped down to the weight of the bike (if that were possible) lol

fuel efficiency wasn't a design goal for our bikes...if it was they would have made the bike slightly more expensive and opted for a fuel injection system...personally that is my only gripe with the bike, I take it everywhere and if it got 50-55mpg instead of 37-41mpg I would save a fair bit of money.

Twin 48mm carbs were designed for consumption, not conservation. If you want a bike that gets 100mpg, I got one for ya.

well i ain't callin you a liar. I'm gonna get a bottle and try it. Just " STP gas treatment" right? If it can improve mileage and performance, it's a win win. I'll let ya know.
