Fall Big Bend Texas ride

In case anyone is looking for an excuse to ride this fall, here's one we are putting together. There should be all types of riders and bikes represented; we don't care just ride your own pace. I have lived in Texas all my life and had never been out there (texas is big ya'll!) until this spring. There aren't many roads but the ones there are great. Plus it's a much shorter ride than to the Ozarks or the Smokies! :-)

Here's the info. If you are interested let me know your email addy to add to the list of potential riders. I'd really like to have some SuperHawks represent! (besidse me). I have a ride report with pics from this spring's ride posted here on the forum:

Friday, October 28, 2005 through Sunday, October 30, 2005

Note that some of us are actually planning to arrive at the jump-off point in the hill country on Thursday, October 27th, but it is up to each individual what day they arrive and actually depart for home, of course.

Where do we plan to meet up? Well, again, after consulting many who have gone before, and also trying to be as convenient and affordable for all involved, the meeting place was decided to be:

Alpine, Texas

There were many discussions about various accommodations, but again for convenience and affordability, plus some folks who have had previous good experiences there, the current spot the South Texas contingent has decided to be staying at is the:

Ramada Limited
2800 West Highway 90
P.O. Box 907
Alpine, Texas 79830
432-837-1100
http://www.ramada-alpine.com/index.htm

Now no reservations have been made yet as I wanted to give everyone on the list one more chance to offer up any other suggestions for possible accommodations. This Ramada was picked because it is reported to be clean, reasonable in rates, conveniently located, have sufficient rooms to handle a larger group, has a free HOT breakfast each morning, and also has a restaurant and bar located right next door that is friendly to motorcyclists. However, if anyone else has better suggestions please fire off a message to me and any others in the group to perhaps change this possibility. If no other suggestions are forthcoming then I will booking a block of rooms on Monday, August 29, 2005 (subject to availability, of course). Currently this Ramada has plenty of rooms available for the dates above.

There is more information on Alpine and other hotels, restaurants, etc. at:

http://www.alpinetexas.com/

If you know of anyone else who would like to come along please have them get in touch with me as soon as possible so I can get them on the e-mailing list, or please contact them yourself to provide them with the necessary information. Hopefully we can get a firm count of those who will be attending by mid to late September.

Thanks, folks, for your patience and interest in the trip, and hopefully we can all make it and have a great ride with some good "bench racing" in the evenings!

Take care and ride safe!

Re: Fall Big Bend Texas ride

Well except for some brief heavy rain the first evening, the weather was perfect (low 70's, abundant sunshine, and light winds). Too bad I couldn't convince any of you to go. I did get a guy with a triumph speed triple to join me for the ride out to meet the group. We've ridden before in the Ozarks so we knew each others speed/style.

1700 miles over the extended weekend with one good 630 mile day on the return leg. We did make a "minor" detour to the hill country (55, 337, 335, 336 plus a couple of unnamed ones!) to break up the long straights. That was about 11 hours overall with about 9 & 1/2 to 10 hours of true saddle time.

I never saw the RLOD on my larger VFR tank while riding with the speed triple as it only had about 145 mile range! :P

Eagle eyes will notice I replaced the RC51 pipes for stockers. I did a partial bafflectomy on these (drilled 8 holes per side). I wanted to have the ability to carry a passenger on this trip; just in case since we would be out in the middle of nowhere. EVERYONE just luuuuuved the rumble of the superhawk. I got numerous compliments on "that great sound".
