Twingle

I was BS-ing with a flat tracker I know and he said that back in the day the Harley guys developed what they called a "Twingle." He said that he couldn't remember off hand how they did it, but that there was more than one way and essentially they set crank/cam/ignition timing in such a manner that both cylinder fired at or nearly at the same time. Apparently they made massive torque and kicked ass in flat track. He couldn't recall any 90 degree twins having been set up that way, but it got me thinking as a fun project. anyone have any thoughts on Twingels?

You need to set your cam timing out 180 degrees on one cylinder (not sure about how to do it with ignition, however) and you will end up with a 90-630 firing interval instead of the habitual 270-540. Doing so will likely end up starving the engine for air at high rpm as the close firing order is not providing sufficient time for the airbox to replenish its supply of fresh air. For kicks, do a Google search on the Aprilia MXV450 (likely works for SXV/RXV 450 and 550 too) as some configured its 77-deg V-twin to run this way

BTW, check the vtr1000.org site for additional info about this as some have inadvertently created a "twingle" from the VTR

Now I see, that could be kinda fun. i bet the hawk would sound pretty good that way.

There was a VTR1000.org member who inadvertantly ran his storm 180° out for a couple of years - it only came to light when it was dynoed ;-) Apparently it ran ok apart from hitting a barrier over about 7000rpm... (carb tweaks got it 9k)
