transmission compatibility

hello... i appologize for jumping in as a noob to this forum and asking very technical questions but time is of the essence... I have a 2000 VTR 1000 superhawk that makes some crazy noises every now and then when i shift to 5th gear (sounds like quarters being thrown into a dryer) i have a chance to get a new transmission fairly cheap but it is from a 1998 vtr 1000... are they compatable?

Yes, they are compatable. No changes to the motor or transmission have been made since the bike's introduction in 1998.

New transmission from a '98 VTR? Somehow, in my brain, that does not compute.

And I bet it won't sound like quarters being thrown into a dryer.
