Tires that work in the rain

This is the last straw

Months ago I mounted a continential conti force tire on the rear of the superhawk.

These tires take a while to heat up, about 15 min. That is issue #1
The second problem that I have with them is that they give very little feedback

I ran into the 3rd problem today. I was getting off of a main road, making a left onto a fun side road. It has been raning on and off today, so the roads are a little slick.

I leaned into the corner a bit and gave it some throttle, nothing too aggressive, being that the roads are slick.

As I turned the corner (about 25mph) I felt the back end start to slide out, really slide out. It stepped out about 2 feet!!!!!!!!!

I chopped the throttle and waited a second for the chassis to settle down, so it wouldnt low side me.

The tires gave me NO feed back, my *** registered the rear end stepping out. I had been riding for about 20-25 min at this point and the tires had been warmed up.

This isnt the first time that these tires have done this to me. There have been a many times that when the road is dry they have done this, they dont grip well.

There has been one other time in the rain that they didnt grip. I turned the corner, applied some throttle, it stepped out, then gripped, and it ended up being a rolling burn out

The stock dunlops wernt to my liking, but they gave you some feedback. These give you nothing.

They are marketed as a sports touring tire, am I being too aggressive with these?

Should I just chuck them in the garbage?

I have been riding for more than 10 years now and I havnt had this problem with any other tire that I have tried.

I am thinking of replacing these pieces of crap with pilot powers. I have a friend with a F4I that I have teken out a few time and I like the feedback that the tires gave.

Sorry about the rant

Re: Tires that work in the rain

It's not just you I had those for a little while as well. What did you really expect for the price though? Conti has two other models that are better but still not the best Conti-force max which is a least a o degree tire the regular conti force's aren't. And the best of the group the conti-force road attack, which I really liked until it developed a crack in the sidewall!!

I've heard good things about the Mich. tires it was a split decision between those and the bridgestones I have now. I have the bto14 and really like them a lot they did really well on a wet track for two days tracks are a little stickier but I felt really comfortable. They also give good feedback so it's easy to tell if your getting out of shape! After two hard track days they still have lots of life left to either get back on the track or for the street.

I have not had ANY complaints out of my Pilot Powers... Rain, Dry, whatever... The only time the rear ever even gives off a tiny slippage feel is on major tar snakes, but thats any tire there...

These things stick like glue!!!

Dunlop D220s, and Michelin Pilot Roads and Powers are all good wet weather tires. I've said this before, and I'll say it again; wet weather performance is the most critical aspect of a street tire. The excellent dry grip of gumball supersport tires suddenly becomes irrelevant when you're caught in the rain, with idiot cage drivers all around you, and you're hydroplaning and sliding all over the place.

Wet weather performance of a motorcycle tire can seriously be a life or death issue. This is not the place to go cheap.

Re: Tires that work in the rain

When I was picking the contis - price wasnt a determining factor. I thought that I would try a harder compound tire, one that would last past 3K miles. That is why I settled on those.

I guess that I should stick with the stickiest compound that I can get

It's actually more about the tread pattern than the compound. Didn't mean to sound snarky, I just hate hearing stories like yours. I lived in Panama City Beach for 3 years, and know how those Florida showers can make a rider's life difficult. The selection of really good rain tires is limited. The D220s and Pilot Roads have good tread life, along with good wet weather performance.

Glad the Contis haven't put you on your ear. Ride safe.

Re: Tires that work in the rain

Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I wasn't implying that you were cheap in any way, I too thought they would last longer, which they didn't by the way.

I should have been more specific when I said the tires broke loose it was in a situation where any tire would have done the same. The track was wet, I was at full lean draggin knee at 70mph when someone attempted to steal my line so I grabbed some more throttle to try to take a tighter line and it slid out on me. There was just no more room left on the tire to grab traction.

I finally got to take them out on regular pavement tonight after all the feeder bands from this stupid hurricane broke up. I live over 600 miles away from where it hit and it still screwed up my weekend. I just feel bad for all the people in the panhandle, they weren't even cleaned up yet from Ivan last year! But enough with the weather report and back to the tires. I've never had the pilots so I can't comment on them but I have had the 220s. I'd have to say after all the different tires I've tried, and if you've seen the tire post you know that is a long list, these are without a doubt the best tires in any weather I've tried so far!

Re: Tires that work in the rain

I had the avons and they gave me a front end wobble but it could've been an issue with one of the tires not all avons. They also took a long time to warm up, didyou notice that?

Re: Tires that work in the rain

Hey, I am not sure if it is of any help, but coming from Belgian weather (if you can call that misery a weather) - IMHO best tires here for wet/dry/all kinds of condition still Bridgestone BT010 or 014, thou of course might be better with 020s as they last longer. Magazines say that too.

Avon Azaro's 49/50 are well respected here too, but mostly popular and very respected in UK, where weather even worse, so I agree with Frodaddy996 on that.

The only thing with BTs (good or bad - that's personal) is that those a bit more "round" than Dunlops...meaning when you flick bike it feels different from more "triangle" Dunlops....

Different yes, I like to call it smoother. Smooth is a good thing IMO. I would use 020s but I do some track days and the 014s seem to do a good job at both.

+1 for the Pilot Powers here. I didn't realize how bad the D204s I had sucked until I upgraded. I've only had nominal rain time on the Pilots, but they're predictable and don't give me the straight line traction problems the Dunlops did at anything over 60mph on wet road. Turn in is a bit more aggressive due to the rear tire profile, but I'd just classify it as different, and not 'bad'.

Re: Tires that work in the rain

Had it just started to rain or rained very little?
If so, then I doubt any tire would have done any better. Those first few minutes are BAADDD when the oil film on the road floats on top of the water and has not yet washed away.
If the rain was coming down and the road was clean, then maybe your search for a different tire is well founded.
I did LOTS of reading before I settled on Michelin Pilot Roads for my CBR1000F and Pilot Powers for the SuperHawk.

I'm sold on their rubber compound.

I treid Pilot Roads on the SH, and for ME, the Pilot Roads did not work well on it, while they work great on the CBR.

Check out the Michelin web site - lots of good info there.

From all I have heard, the Pilot Powers last a looonngg time based on what one would expect from a true sport tire. Again, it's the rubber compund.

I have BT-10's on mine and if there is a better tire it wouldn't do me anymore good than these seem to do.

Re: Tires that work in the rain

To clarify - the previouos week it has rained here off and on (damn hurricane)

Sunday when I took the shawk out - It wasnt raning yet. The roads were a little damp from the rain the day before.

I was consious of that and didnt take the corner as hard as I normally would of. If I did I think I would have landed on my ***.

Re: Tires that work in the rain

all the discussion on tires is helpful as i am in desperate need of some new ones. i am having trouble deciding on a what type though. the stock dunlop sportmax seem to have worked o.k. but they don't last to long. i was thinking about the d220 or maybe the battlax b020. can anyone say which has worked better for them as far as mileage and overall performance. my local shop doesn't stock either but they do sell dunlops and said they could order what i want. any suggestions?

Re: Tires that work in the rain

Between the two, I've seen more riders in my area using the Battlax020's, though I haven't had any experience with either tire. I'm going to try the Michelin Pilot Roads as a replacement for my Conti-Forces.

The Michelin Pilot Roads worked the best (grip, wear and rain duty) on my VFR, but pricey. Better than the BT020's. Never tried the D220's, but will probably give them a try next on the SH.

Re: Tires that work in the rain

The stock tires.....for me....handling not to good. But...lasted well.
Avon 49/50....handled GREAT!!! but 207's were better in UK weather. Very short life!
Had 3 sets of 207's. Excellent all-around tire, even when I hit an ice patch .
205's.....not impressed in any way.
Currently....Battle-ax 10/20 combo. Good in the wet. I haven't pushed them for handling.....soon

I had Pilot Roads on my SH for one summer.
They are a very good tire and performed nicely until I started pushing them very hard.
Treating them like a fully blown sport tire (Pilot Powers on now) just didn't work.
They broke free, and I mean broke free - not pushing - broke free, in turns on several occasions. This was on dry pavement and riding very aggressively. No chicken strip at all, ridden all the way to the edge.
If you do not do as I was doing, I suspect you'll be very happy with the Pilot Roads.
So far, it appears the Pilot Powers will last a lot longer than one would expect from a pure sport tire.

I'm sold on them, but have not ridden much in the rain on them.
I have heard from others they do very well, and I would expect that is the case.
