PSA: Check your clutch fluid!

I am usually good with bleeding my brakes and keeping that fluid fresh. But today I bled the clutch for the first time in probably two years. Looked like chocolate milk! Just something that has skipped my mind. Go check yours!

Do yourself a favor, do it again... AFTER removing the slave cylinder and popping the piston out to clean the slave cylinder.

You will find slimy nasty crud in the slave... and that stuff is not good for it.
Every single VTR I have worked on, I have found that nasty crud in the slave, when working on the clutch system.. ,, that’s 6 or 7 VTRs in the last few years. .. OS not a lot, but enough to say it's common.

YOUR dead on with the routine maint... Once a year during a normal oil change I change ALL fluids.. brake , clutch and coolant.

I change it when it gets dark, at least once per season

May as well get a braided clutch line while you're at it. The stock rubber hose causes the majority of that crud as the hose breaks down. Replacing it with a PTFE lined hose will allow you to go much longer between fluid changes.

I replaced my line with a braided steel a couple years back. It still gets dark, but you are right, it does so much more slowly. I still replace it at least once per year, given the minimal cost of doing so.....

I just empty and clean all reservoirs 3-4 times yearly and never bleed unless i have to remove brake or clutch. I do to keep it clean and fresh all the time. Cheap maintenance and it makes me feel good too. ha

Ick here is what you are talking about. After this was done I also replaced all the fluids. So gross.

Just did my clutch fluid swap and bleed the other day. Was amazed how quick it gets dirty. Have clean fluid in the break reservoirs and am gonna bleed them tonight.

Here is what came out....YUCK!!!
