Plastic Rivets

The fairing is attached to the left rad and the area near the fan by plastic rivets. I've been using expensive genuine Honda plastic rivets and I've been able to transform them into genuine junk. The rivets should be reusable but when I put them back in either they don't hold or I strip the phillips heads or threads on them. Are there any good alternatives to the OEM rivets other than cable ties?

I'll be watching this thread. I hate those little POS.

You can purchase replacements at a portion of the cost from Fastenal. You need to look in their automotive section. I will post when I find it.

Well, now we just have to check the size, and that is up to you.

But wait, you say, these are over 9 bucks!
that is for 25, and if you know the retailer like I do, you will pay between 7-8 biggee's. That isn't bad when the Auto manufacturers are charging $25 for 5 of them!!!!!!

comedo 11-27-2007 02:29 PM

Thanks, Bill. Really appreciate it.

Yeah, thanks Bill! My local Honda shop sells these for $3.25 each. I bought some from Ronnies but they are too big.

autoteach 11-28-2007 04:51 AM

Just make sure that you get the right size!! The reason that I found out about these is I did a fan relay on a jeep grand cherokee, and we needed to take the bumper off, thats right, to get to the relay wich was below the headlight. to put it back together we need to replace the rivets, which I got a "deal" on from the chrysler dealer for $17 for five of them. It would have cost me $8 for 25 from fastenal, but I didn't know that they had them until afterwards. It sucked.

superbling 11-28-2007 06:57 AM

Most autoparts and/or hardware stores have these types of fasteners at a price in between your friendly honda stealer and fastenal.com

Superbling came without them and I never got around to putting any back in; never had an issue and fairing removal was even quicker. I had two sets of bodywork and switched out many a time; no rubbing, paint missing, etc,. YMMV

Mine went missing a long time ago and I never bothered... No damage as far as I can see...

Note: and I even have some laying around... Mazda uses em all over the place in plastic parts in the interior...

I bought a rubber grommet with a brass threaded fitting in it, and used a small stainless hex head bolt (like the ones used to hold the fairings) to replace those stupid items. You can find this stuff at Home Depot... for like 3 bucks, you'll have something that shouldn't strip (unless you muscle it too tight) and you'll actually be able to remove it.

*** You will need to drill the hole a bit larger to fit the rubber grommet.... but 30 seconds to widen the hole, and toss those plastic parts was well worth it.

I like this solution. I am still using my original plastic fasteners, believe it or not, but I have cussed those things so many times.... They're a bitch to remove, which isn't made easier by the fact that you can't see them unless you crawl under the bike with a light and slip a knife edge under them.

+1 I just use a tiny eye glass type flat blade screw driver to lift the screw peice out and then remove the both peices.

autoteach 11-28-2007 11:27 AM

if you have new ones that are not worn, or stripped, light pressure on the screws will allow you to remove them by unscrewing them. Past that, you will need something to pry them out.
