Non start issue

I know the procedures but out of the blue my bike died when I hit the starter button. Whole dash went blank. Battery is good. I swapped out the solenoid and the same thing results. I will swap out the starter tomorrow to see if the old one is siezed.

Anyone have any other ideas of where to look in case that isnt the fix?

Just thought someone had this one before.

Sure the battery is good? I've had cells go out upon turning the key (in cars) and things can get weird from there.

Haha yeah thats a good question. I had dreams last night about it and I think the battery had a failure. It usually comes slowly but sometimes suddenly. I swapped the solenoid and have a backup starter but yeah I am ordering a battery even though I have a backup to throw in. My bike is a daily rider so I always keep backups of parts, wheels, etc.
I was getting on the bike with my 9yr old son to head out to Long Island from here in NYC for his football game. The bike just died and like everyone else I was blind to a failed battery. I remember so well when it was shiny and new and I may (may) be getting old LOL

Thanks Steve

OK I diagnosed it. (!!!)

No way will anyone reading this guess the problem.

It was hydraulic lock of the motor.
My petcock has been failing and it stuck open and flowed fuel into the front cylinder. That is why the starter couldnt turn the motor over.

VTR1000F Jun 2, 2023 02:39 AM

Be careful, now. Don't check your oil level with a match.

smokinjoe73 Jun 2, 2023 04:45 AM

Shoot yes you may be right!
Thank God I didnt just change my oil with new expensive synthetic. I will drain it today with no open flames nearby lol.
In the meantime I had to swap to the tank from my SSS VTR to be able to ride.

Doesn't the fuel hydro lock due to a failed peacock diagram also indicate the float valves are compromised as well?

xeris Jun 2, 2023 06:19 AM

I sure do like how the SSSA looks.

smokinjoe73 Jun 2, 2023 06:38 AM

Yes sorta about the float valve. It could be a tiny bit of grit that allowed a trickle to fill it overnight. I can eventually replace the float valves which is easy but the carbs are a pia to remove. First crawl then run......

smokinjoe73 Jun 2, 2023 07:45 AM

BTW it looks like the float valves are $30 EACH! If you can even find them.

Anyone have a better source?

Looks like the price of a carb rebuild kit is the same as the valves alone and includes more parts......

VTR1000F Jun 2, 2023 08:09 AM

Jeez, Joe, looks like you've put a lot of work into your SSS / single exhaust SH to be selling it. I've said it before, "Never sell a SuperHawk or a gun."

killer5280 Jun 2, 2023 08:23 AM

I have been considering selling my Superhawk and have come to the same conclusion.

smokinjoe73 Jun 2, 2023 08:39 AM

Yeah maybe I will transfer the 600RR dash onto the SSS bike and make that my primary. Would have to swap the GIVI setup too.

VTR1000F Jun 2, 2023 11:23 AM

Just a thought, in fact, I think I may have gotten this idea from you in the first place, but I bolted a GIVI mount to the back of a spare (Sargent) seat. If I need the cargo space, I just swap seats and stick my 50L GIVI bag on there. Super easy and requires no permanent mod to the bike. Of course, no saddle bags with this setup and you lose your pillion, but no one I know is dumb enough to get on a bike with me anyway. It's a great option if that's enough cargo space and no one trusts you.

It is indeed possible you got that from me. This is from 2006ish maybe? It was when I still lived in Brooklyn. This works in a pinch but I now ride my son on the bike so not feasable.

VTR1000F Jun 2, 2023 04:44 PM

Two-up? That's what the other bike is for.

smokinjoe73 Jun 3, 2023 10:14 AM

So as for this awful petcock.......
This is my 2nd time rebuilding it this week. The first time was with a no name kit and it still leaked. This time I used real Honda parts but had to buy the metal sandwiched pieces too. Seems to be sealing. I also had to buy a screen at $32 but the old one was swollen after a couple decades in gas and the trash that passes for gas these days.
The weak link seems to be the scrawny O ring that is the ONLY seal (thanks honda) between the petcock and tank. The whole flat mating surface is UNSEALED. Even the utube vids on this scoff at the design.
