my Fz600 project, pic heavy journey

Hey guys,
About a month ago, I got my wife her next evolution bike... a wrecked 1987 Yamaha FZ600. Guy thought it was blown up (which turned out to be carbs out of synch), and I got it for $300. So I did an engine out, frame up on it, including port a polish on the engine, this is where I am now. Figured it is something you don't see everyday. I did change it some from 1987 to more of a 1198 flavor. Notice the SH rear cowl and tail light! It now just needs a windshield, and turn signals.

That looks really sharp. Nice use of a Superhawk seat cowl.
Any plans on covering the subframe or is it going to stay open ?

Holy crap! What a difference. Spot on, awesome work man. You made a '80's flashback turn into something many people here wouldn't mind being seen on, let alone ride. I'm trying to find a bike for my sister to learn on, but she thinks that these early bikes that I have found for a decent price are ugly and she wouldn't be seen on one (woman, hey? haha)
Now, thanks to you, I can show her this little gem and that with a little elbow grease and some time she can have something that she can ride and not be embarrassed of.

Oh, and nice freakin' garage! I wish that I had all that work space.

No, it is going to stay open, a la 1198:

Thanks for the compliments, guys! My wife would not ride it in stock trim either, since it looked like something from Top Gun. She didn't even think I could hide that look. The tailwork made the most difference, I think.

It's funny you mention that. I was thinking Hot Shots

I still can't believe you did all of that work in about a month. Must have had a lot of time on your hands.

Sweet. Of course I like the naked picture slightly better. Those old Yamahas had great-looking tanks and going sans the fairing really shows it off. It sort of looks like a SRX on steroids.

+1

Awesome work on the bike- how many hours would you guess that you have into it? Seems like such a huge difference for what you have into it...?

You're right, there really isn't a lot of time in it. Prolly 40-60 hours max, although I really haven't counted. Given how it looked before, a few little things went a long way.

Oh, the red emulated SH red, but is really an OEM Ferrari color. Very red at any rate!

BAD.....***!!

That has gotta be the best FZ600 on the road today. I remember that bike well. Being a honda guy I had a hurricane back then.

A guy I knew wanted me to look at one for him to buy. The guy sold it dirt cheap because he thought the gears were stripped. I test rode it and figured out that the chain was loose and the front sprocket stripped so when you gassed it, the chain would jump the teeth. As his "mechanic" I said it needs a new tranny so he got it for a song &

I just changed the chain & sprockets & it was good to go...Must be a theme for buying these things

Hey I had to represnt my guy. The seller was already selling it dirt cheap due to the '"stripped gears". I merely advised my guy to buy it.

T99ford

you got to be proud of that baby and i'm sure your wife will feel the same when she is riding that baby down the road. Based on this build, it looks like you have some real talents. there. Congrats!

I BOUGHT THIS BIKE 3 WEEKS AGO!

I saw it on craigslist and instantly loved her. Put a couple hundred miles on so far and she runs great. Thanks for the great work original poster!
