Hi,
I am yet another newby in need of some of your wisdom. Does anyone out there know about the metal pieces that fit over the battery terminals that keep the battery from draining that only come on the '98 model? I know that I lost mine and later, browsing through a manual that I downloaded onto a laptop that is now dead, I remember reading something like "**98 model only, metal pieces need to be connected to battery or it will not maintain it's charge"...I had been monkeying with hooking up heated grips and at that point felt regretful as I recalled a couple weeks prior I removed those annoying little pieces because they made it difficult to attach my battery tender. Thought I had set them aside, but nowhere to be found... Fast forward a couple of months and now my bike will not start with a supposedly charged (according to the green light on my battery tender) sealed yuasa battery. This was a progressive phenomenon, as it was starting just fine as long as I rode it or had it on the tender, but now needs a jump just to fire up. FYI I ended up running the heated grips straight off the headlight wire, not straight to the battery. I've had the bike since July and don't know how old the battery is for sure..I'm hesitant to buy a new battery as I suspect it will start the bike at first but eventually fail without those pieces. I have searched online & called some parts houses here in Portland and so far, haven't seen the pieces or found anyone who knows what the hell I'm talking about. If anyone knows what these pieces are called, or where to order them, I would greatly appreciate the info.
Cheers,
Mikey

Parts Fiche for a '98. I don't see the pieces that you're talking about...
In general, if you're storing your bike for long periods of time, it's best to just disconnect the battery. I'm betting that you just have a dead battery and you need a new one, especially with your description of it being a progressive phenom.

You are looking for metal pieces that magically keeps your battery from draining? I think you will keep looking for a long, long while for those, since there are no such thing...
It's not in any manual, or on any parts list... That might be a clue perhaps?
And even if it where, you would have to explain to me how they supposedly worked before I'd belive it... No such things exist according to the laws of physics...
Start by having your battery load tested, your battery tender is about as reliable for knowing the condition of the battery as the local fortune teller... They get it right once in a while...
Next, if you have a 98 bike, do you have a 98 R/R? If so, it's the most likely culprit... Go read up on R/R failures on the forum...

Thanks 7moore7.
It was just a dead battery, but that's probably not news to you
I will go out & buy a real manual soon.
Tweety, thanks for the smug and insultive advice. Everyone that read it was surely impressed.
