Luggage
Does anyone here use luggage on a regular basis? I would like to use my bike to commute to school and back, and am unsure what to buy. I'd like to keep the price somewhat reasonable.
I need to be able to hold a couple of books, my helmet, and jacket in the bag. Preferably it will have a shoulder strap or something to help me carry it around.
So far I've found a 50 liter tailbag that looks like it would work. It can be seen here. The 'Euro Sport Jumbo Tail Bag' looks like it would work; and it is pretty cheap, too! I used to have some Road Gear saddlebags and were pretty impressed with their quality. I think I might mount the tailbag lengthwise, though, as that bag might be too wide to go across the rear seat.
I also looked at the Ventura system, seen here. The pack that goes with that is 45 liters and can be ordered with shoulder straps. The whole setup (rack, bag, straps) would be a bit over $300 from that site. Anyone know a place that sells these for less?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Re: Luggage
I've got the ventura system. It does work great, and the quality is good, but I still think it's overpriced. I picked mine up off ebay. If you watch/wait, it goes up for sale sooner or later. The backpack straps are sorta narrow on the Ventrura system. If you really load it up, they dig into you.
BTW...there's one on ebay right now.

I've also got a set of Chase Harper Saddle bags.

They work great with low mounts, but are too big for high mount mufflers. They are also really, awkward to carry off the bike, as they only have 2 center mounted handles.

Re: Luggage
I have the 'Ventura' expandable pack, and rack support, on mine when I need it. It is a tough setup.. and never a problem when riding,.. but that is a lot of bag to be carring around all day.
I also he the 'Oxford' side bags that are similar to the picture above. The work well with original low mufflers.

It's down to $140 $150.

I would go for the currier bags, but they simply don't hold as much as a good backpack.

Re: Luggage
If that doesn't cut it I'll likely order the Ventura setup, or maybe even a Givi topcase.
Re: Luggage
I have a givi top rack (trunk) that I use on my bikes. Love how easy it is to use, and locks to the bike so I can leave or unlock to take with me. Hard shell, big case, and locks.
I have the top plate kit for the VTR bought of a fellow list member which I never installed. Any interest? You'd be on your own for the actual bag though.

Re: Luggage
Here's a small solution to the baggage problem.
http://chicane-usa.com/summit.htm
This is one of the best made and most functional bags I've ever owned. Made here in Colorado. I combine it with my Wolfman magnetic tank bag
http://www.wolfmanluggage.com/03Tank/MagBag.html
and I'm happy. Admittedly it isn't the kind of carrying capacity that I have on my BMW, but then again, I don't take my Hawk on cross county jaunts either. (Actually...come to think of it...I might just do that but I'll probably just pack one change of clothes and a credit card.)
