Largest Carb on a production bike?

I think I remember reading that the VTR has the largest carbs ever produced on a production bike.

Was that true?
And if so, is it still true?

What size are they? 48mm Flat slike Mikuni's????

If you have a long

beard or let little kids near the carbs with the air box cover off, don't let either get too close if its running...

I remember telling my summer boss that they were "BIG" and he brushed it off. He ran a shifter cart with a 44 and has dual 40's on his 1980 srx440. When I was doing carb work he looked at them and said, "HOLY COW, you weren't lying"

I've only ever heard them described as the largest honda has ever put on a bike but I've never heard of any that are bigger...

They're 48 mm.

The Aprilia RSV4 has FOUR 48 mm throttle bodies. And the Ducati Streetfighter S Has 60 mm elliptical throttle bodies.

Ok. Those are big throttle bodies.
But that's still Fuel injected. I'm talking actual carbs here.

The SP-2 had 62 mm throttle bodies (SP-1 had 54 mm). For carbs, a few sleds (notably the 95-96 Ski-Doo Mach 1 and MXZ 670 HO) had 44 mm round-slide (Mikuni VM) carbs.

i did a little research and i cannot find another production bike with a 48mm carb. does not mean they are not out there but google doesn't know of one. i did find an article saying that 48mm is about the practical limit for motorcycles.

cv carbs arent directly comparable to other types, lik FCR or something. but yes 48mm is still big. i know of carbs that are larger, but not stock on production vehicles. the 42mm is largest non-cv carb on production vehicle i know of, and i would bet it performs better then our 48mm cv.

BTW Honda owns a controlling share in Keihin so they dont use Mik carbs very often. it does happen, just not often. and our 48mm's are keihin.

As mentioned earlier, a few snowmobiles came with 44s (if you consider those vehicles...). I also recall an aftermarket snowmobile parts manufacturer building them up to 52 mm (for large-displacement custom two-stroke snowmobile engines). Now that is a big-*** carb!

You have to remember that a 48 mm throttle body wil not flow as much air as a 48 mm slide carb due to the presence (and turbulence) of the butterfly (and many new bikes even have two per throttle body). I always wondered why they never built slide-type FI systems (no butterfly to screw with airflow)...
