I'm looking into getting the OEM shop manual, but it'll be a good week or more before I got the one I'm looking at.

I could go home today with the Haynes manual. Has anyone ever used the Haynes? I mainly need to use it to know how to do the CCT and the valve adjustment. But if the book is crap, I won't waste my money.

This reminds me... what kind of tools do I need for the jobs at hand? I'm planning on replacing the stock cct's with the APE ones, and then the valve adjustment.

Although the factory manuals are usually better in many ways, they sometimes don't explain certain proceedures that are covered in the common service manual or assume you all ready know how to do it.

The aftermarket guys typically assume you don't know jack and tend to explain ALL things step by step. And they sometimes show you how to make or sidestep expensive factory tools/equipment.

If I'm going to keep a bike awhile or it needs lots of service, I get both; preferably the haynes or clymer hardcopy and the factory on a cheap CD.

 

I figured I'd end up with both manuals. I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, so it's good when all aspects of a job are explained.

I like the OEM service manual better. I actually remember finding some errors on torque values in the Haynes manual. It was like 3 times higher than what it should've been... Good thing that my common sense told me that it couldn't be that high... Don't quite remember what it was though. Just make sure to double check with the OEM manual.
