Feedback for bar risers and exhaust.

Okay, so I got a job so now it's really time to fix the bike up where I want it. I can get most stuff at dealer cost so I'm really jonesing for this.

Primarily, exhaust. It has a Two Bros slip-on that's just too loud. I hate riding around scared to poke at some revs due to the noise. From what I've seen Jardine are the only ones that make a "street" baffled cannister. The bike is plenty fast (I get more thrills maintains speed than attaining speed) so performance isn't much of an issue. I wouldn't even mind going back to stock. Are there other cans that actually muffle the exhaust?

Bar risers. Helibars are too much IMO (not that I can't afford it, I just don't think they're worth the money). GenMar seem a bit cheesy and I don't like the way they cover the rebound/preload. And I don't think they raise the bars *quite* enough. Anyone found anything else? I've looked over the bar conversions and I don't think I want the controls that high, and I'd rather not have to replace the shiny metal lines the DPO installed. Anyone used stock VFR ('00 or earlier) or NT650 bars? They're all 41mm and should fit if there's enough brake line.

Do you have high mounts or standard? If you don't care actually a pair of stock pipes can be modified to different degrees with the bafflectomy to achieve a more mild sound you'll like. I mean you're only limited by your imagination. I see so many cool looking stock cans for newer sportbikes for cheap on ebay, many made out of titanium too. As far as bars they're not cheap but I'm currently in the middle of mounting up a pair of convertibars for my project because they have a huge range of adjustment, so those are worth looking at. Gilles also makes a set of bars that adjust in just about every possible direction. I haven't tried the vfr bars but they seem like a nice option and also alot cheaper too.

convertibars

I just installed Convertibars last week and I am very impressed so far. No more numb hands. If you are interested, let me know and I'll e-mail photos and more info. The install was a bit of a pain, but now I'm glad I did it.

Maybe you can repack the 2Bros? Lots cheaper than new. You don't say why you need bar risers so it's difficult to make a recom on what we don't know. Early (94-97) VFR bars will work on the stock tubes. Find some - I caught one set available this year so Heli's or the others might be a timely alternative. The archives are full of these sorts of opinions. I encourage you to do some reading - no - a lot of reading - before you make a buying decision. These guys have put up YEARS of experience on this bike. They say it best. Best of luck!

Thanks, guys, I've been reading the forum for a while, but I think nuhawk said what I should have said... why I'm looking. I haven't found info suited to my needs for sound (I just want quieter! ) or bars.

I've seen the Gilles bars but they don't show risers for the VTR, just the variobar, and even at dealer cost they're stupid expensive. I'd guess the risers interfere with the fairing since everything else would be the same as the VFR kit they do offer. I don't think I want to go as far as putting a bar kit on it without trying the much higher position. When I'm riding if a just use my fingertips on the grips then I'm WAY more comfortable, so I think I'd be happier just moving the bars up and back a couple of inches. Bluevtr, I saw your thread on the convertibars and someone else had pics recently. I just don't think that's what I want to do yet. If I could get Helibars at dealer cost I probably would have already.

As for repacking the Two Bros, I probably will anyway, but I don't think they're going to be much better. The bike has just over 5k miles on it, so if repacking them helps that just means they blew in under 5k miles and new packing isn't going to stay. Plus, the DPO dropped the bike so the pipes are really scuffed up. How can I resist the urge of shiny and new?!?!

Pipes and Bars

I'm running RC51 mufflers on mine.
They weigh less than stock look and sound better and are usually fairly cheap on e-bay.
(I gave up passenger pegs and have been too lazy to figure out how to get them back on)

As far as bars are concerned some folks use the VFR800 bars, I think, and some others, such as myself, have drilled the upper triple clamp for bar risers to install tubular bars.

Let your imagination be your guide.

Jardines are on the upper end of the loudness scale. On the low end are stock (duh), stock with a lite bafflectomy, staintunes with spuds, and any of the street legal euro spec cans. Superbling came with blown out TBR titanium high mounts and they were very loud.

As for the bars, VFR and heli's units are as high as you can go regarding fairing clearance. Pullback is another story. The tank recesses are there for a reason. With VFR bars you are at the limit; positioned too far back and they hit the tank on full lock, positioned too far forward and they hit the fairing so they have to be set right in the middle (near stock).

So to get more pull back than that, you will have to go high enough to clear the tank and that creates fairing clearance issues. The two solutions I've seen are: trim the fairings or use a wide enough bar (33+ inches) to space out the switchgear to miss the fairings on full lock. That is too wide and uncomfortable for me.

I guess you could also go with a handlebar with so much pullback that it wouldn't be close to the fairings on full lock but that would surely mean all new, longer switchgear, lines, and cables.

I have leo's on my current VFR and they are quiet. The have a removable baffle (can't tell in the pic) and are from the evo II line. I don't know if this new model line is available for the VTR but the build quality is superb.

That's about what I expect on the bars... thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to see some VFR bars on a VTR and see if it is feasible for me.

Jardine lists a race can and a street can... I'm sure the "car alarm" cans are the race version, but I think I'll go with Leo Vince, always nice stuff.

When I get pipes, these'll be listed CHEEP, the DPO dropped the bike and they're far from flawless.

Thanks, guys!
