Question Fairing Stay Blues

I'm trying(!) to get a Sharkskins fairing mounted up nice and square, and my fairing stay is giving me fits. It was tweaked when the bike was wrecked, and although it didn't look like it was bent very bad, I'll be darned if I can get things lined up correctly. I've straigtened it and re-bent it so many times I've lost count.

I'm probably going to have to buy a new one, but thought I'd ask to see if anyone can help. A couple measurements would probably help a bunch.
  1. How far apart should the arms be at the top?
  2. What is the correct distance from the center of the steering stem to the top edge of the arms?
  3. Anyone got a straight one for sale?
Thanks!

They are a complex bunch of bends and such, Very hard to measure and come up with index measurements on the stay. Mine is very slightly tweaked, as Nuhawk and I decided today.. so I’ll not even try and get you any dimensions. If someone has a known straight stay and comes up with so common reference points and good measurements.. I’d be interested.

There's a remarkable amount of engineering in the fairing stay, and you're right, there's no easy way to meausre or establish a reference point. I think I've resigned myself to buying a new one, unless one shows up for sale pretty quick.

My fairing stay saved my life in my last crash. I have one that is and was bought as "slightly tweaked"

It is. but only slightly. I was hanging virgin fairings over the bike so I elected not to use it.

It's yours for about 120 - 150. I gotta go back before the server crash to find out out much I paid for it.

1. 11.5"
2. From the top of steering stem to the top edge of arms = 9"

No offense taken just too many other details to remember. You're right. I checked Service Honda and they're $167. I'd take half that if you're interested.

Thanks, Blue Ridge. That'll give me enough to figure out how bad mine is, then decide if I can straigten it.

Ok. I just measured, and I'm very close to Blue Ridge's measurements. I'll try a few more tweaks and see if I can get it where it needs to be. If I can't get it squared up, I guess I'll just spring for a new one.

Nuhawk, given my experience with my slightly tweaked one, I'll probably pass, but thanks for the offer.

keep in mind....the 9" measurement is from the top of the nut on the steering stem...not the middle.

10-4 there! I bolted it up to my bike, walked around it for a week. When the new fairings arrived I decided it wasn't worth the stretch.

Race plastics maybe - so if you crash and you need some help - post up.

Note: this is a lightweight racing version that the gauges may not bolt on to. FWIW

Wow. The aluminum Graves stay is cool! Too bad it's not streetable. Based on everyone's comments I think I'll just buy a new one and quit trying to rehab the bent one. It'll never be right, and I'll always be messing with it. I've already broke my budget anyway.

Thanks for the measurements. They worked perfect. I must comment that the measurements are only part of gettin them lined up. They will still read 9"s even if the whole stay is shifted in a direction. Give yourself a refrence point to judge if the whole stay is shifted. U will know as soon as u get your fairing back on.
