On Bike Video - The $8.50 Alternative
On Bike Video - The $8.50 Alternative
I purchased a "Keychain Spy Camera" for $8.50 (incl. S/H) on eBay. It arrived from China in about 8 days. I inserted a 2 GB (it is supposed to work with upto 16 gigs) microSD and mounted it on the rear tail piece for one session and on the front fender (a really bad choice) for a second session.
This is certainly NO GoPro HD but for $8.50 it works very nicely and more than met my expectations. Of the 2 GB microSD about 1.6 GB was used for a 20 min. track session. I brought my laptop along and move the file to it so I could record a second session.
You can view samples of the KSC video on youtube--search for "keychain spy video."

Below is a link to my first test run with this camera. I bought it on eBay, and it arrived to me in less than a week. Worked first time and very easy to use. As you can see, the picture quality is not the greatest, but for 8 bucks, I'm not going to complain. I'm happy with it.
I'm not sure why I was getting the "wavy" artifact in the picture. I'll have to experiment with other mounting positions to see if that goes away. It doesn't do that when I'm just holding the camera taking video around the house.
I duct-taped the camera under my front headlight. Too easy . . .

I couldn't figure out how to remove the card the first time, but once that was figured out it's actually easy. I just use a pen to push it in slightly, and then it pops out enough to grab it (it's spring loaded somehow internally).
There is a small usb connection on the side for charging the battery, and it came with a usb cord and an installation disc (that you don't need to use the camera, but you do need it for setting the date/time stamp). The battery life seems very good for such a small thing. It was still working after my one hour ride, and it wasn't fully charged when I started the ride. Not sure how much longer it would have kept going.
The quality seems to vary a lot depending on where you buy. I bought from this guy (I thought it was $8, but it was just under $10 including shipping):

Yeah you could put it just about anywhere it's so small. The pinhole camera is in the "front" of it. I aimed it just by eye when taping it to the front of my bike, and it worked fine. It actually has a fairly wide viewing angle, so it doesn't have to be positioned perfectly to still get a decent picture.
hold the power button down for a second or two and the power light will come on. after that, hold the video button down until you see the power light flash a couple times. that means the video is started. To stop, I just push the power button again to turn the thing off.
If you want to video again, just power on and push the video button the same way.
