The best year is Yellow.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm a bit of a VTR newbie myself, but as far as I know mechanically they are all very similar. From 2002(?) there were some changes to instruments, bar angle and in some markets, fuel tank size, but I believe the suspension, engine, brakes all remained unchanged throughout the model life. Personally I have a 97 that started it's life as a Japanese domestic model, and have replaced the shock and revalved and re-sprung the front end, and replaced the front brakes with CBR954 parts, but I'd do those mods on any year. A larger fuel tank would be plus if I could find a decent one locally, but I can usually get 200+ km out of tank now.

I have a 00' and other than issues that the previous owners caused, I love it to death.
Just wish it had a gas gauge and a bigger gas tank.

It's going to be a similar case with any bikes that are basically unchanged for years through their model run. Yes there were a few minor little updates like the instruments but (if you have a choice) it's really going to boil down to things like your personal choice of something like color, and most importantly the care and condition of the bike, along with what kind of deal you can get on it.

In a roundabout way, that was sort of what I meant to say as well! All VTR's are created equal, so I would be making a decision on the condition of the bike, maintenance history and any modifications from standard, rather than the year. And not all modifications are UPgrades.

Some were of the opinion the first model year had a bit more horsepower but I don't know if that's demonstrably true. Personally I stick with the red ones.

I've learned a lot about these bikes, and a lot of information in general, from these guys on here. Research before you ask your questions tho, people can get a lil fiery when someone asks and was answered years ago, even months ago when the submitter wouldve found if they'd simply done a little searching first- do the searches, spend the time, its worth it. We're also [me for sure] wanting/willing to learn from others and newbies as well. So do share. But also some questions answered can be a bit hard to find too, so thats also a known point.
