back tire mounting backwards?

my bt016 is almost bald and i wanna do one more track day this year but it wont pass tech. so my buddy gave me his pure rear scrub. the track were riding at has 12 turns. 3 of those turns are lefts. the right side of the tire has more wear than the left side because it was used on this track and he said that he heard that some guys will put the tire on backwards on this type of track and therefore get another track day or so out of it. has anyone heard of someone doing that? im pretty careful not to ride in the rain so rain channels arent a worry of mine, then again the pure doesnt really have any real rain channels, lol, so would i be safe to ride this tire backwards?

autoteach 09-07-2010 08:55 PM

um, no?!

nath981 09-07-2010 09:04 PM

Turn that succa around. You're really not supposed to turn radials around once they are used in one direction, but it's probably gonna work. Just think, you could be a scientist for a day!

uchi 09-07-2010 09:18 PM

lol well its not mounted yet, its sitting in my garage right now and im contemplating bringing it and my 16 to the track mounted on the bike, it has lots of side life just not that much down the center.

nath981 09-07-2010 09:35 PM

supposedly the belts wear directionally or maybe assume a certain bias that might compromise their ability to withstand reversal, but i'm sure desperados like yourself have done it and got away with it. Check with your better half and find out whether she gives a shit if you and/or your hawk lose a little skin.

RCVTR 09-07-2010 10:13 PM

I'm not sure about street tires, but it's SOP to turn race tires over.

smokinjoe73 09-07-2010 10:24 PM

I have done it many times with race tires but they are dots anyway so no different. Loudon is mostly lefts so I swap them to get another track day out of them. Never even heard of any ill results. Go ahead but realize you are slightly sacraficing a bit of rubber in those 3 turns on the worn side. I doubt you would notice.

uchi 09-08-2010 04:18 AM

Well id rather sacrifice a little bit of rubber on the left side than to have not enough for the right side by the end of the day, this tire needs to last me one more track day thats it :)

Damn there are some mixed answers here. Any other guys who race have any input on this matter?

Racer replied for you already.

Old Yeller 09-08-2010 05:08 AM

It's common practice on the track to flip tires, however, try going to the STT forum and asking some of the guys there. STT promotes Michelin tires, so those guys would have some experience with running Pures.

uchi 09-08-2010 05:09 AM

I'm trying to figure out what SOP stands for. :-)

opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one. Everyone's got different levels of caution/carelessness. If you need to use it, then use it. Quit fuckin around and lookin for someone to hold your hand. We can't be responsible, it's your ballgame. Flip a freakin coin and don't look back. Maybe if you whine enough to your girlfriend, she'll buy you a new one. hahaha Hey, you can find out how much she loves you. hahaha:D

You'll find out in that first turn.

nath981 09-08-2010 07:54 AM

And it's a big chest too. haha.

Uchi, if you weren't destroyin all those knee pucks, maybe you could afford some new tires. Think about it.

whenever you get to the track, ask them if you could go the other way so you won't have to run your tires backwards.

Tweety 09-08-2010 07:59 AM

Blow up...Nope... Might buck you off into the scenery though if you push it too much...

I have done that with the PP 2CT's and PP Race which is the predecessors to the PP Pure and the PP One, and it works fine for track riding... Keep in mind that you kind of need to scrub it in in the new direction, even thought it's worn already... And depending on how worn they are, be careful in the corners where you use the worn side... There is a point where grip just dissapears...

uchi 09-08-2010 03:17 PM

makes me hesitant to try it now. damn it lol. maybe ill leave the 16 on, it has lots of side life just into the wear bars down the center. and ill bring this one just incase they wont let me run the 16.

thanks for all the info guys :)

also i have 2 more sets of pucks here both are pretty hard so they should last me a while still :D

You running TMP this weekend? Who's got a track day coming up in Ontario?

trinc 09-08-2010 03:50 PM

if the center is close to the wear bars then i'd put the pure on backwards... the last thing you want to do is pull the rear tire and have to go through tech again... unless you change your own tires. ( tire venders seem to be VERY busy in the morning ). 1 time my tires didn't pass & had to buy a new set... missed 1/2 of the first session ( + had to pay track tire prices  )

uchi 09-08-2010 05:28 PM

Matt. Running on the 25th at tmp. Gwb is hosting it I believe.

I'll take a picture of the pure and put it up and also of the 16 to get your opinions on them. My buddy ran a session at calabogie on them and then bought pirellis after so I'd imagine it would pass tech thy right side just has some good wear to it

autoteach 09-08-2010 06:44 PM

all I know is that the race slicks that we used in fsae would chunk out at the lap joint if operated in the wrong direction. Take it for what it is worth, this stinky a-hole opinion.

uchi 09-08-2010 07:34 PM

I won't run it backwards fuck it its not worth potentially going down. Thanks for all the advice :-)
