3 fatalities in two days at the gap

First I have been busy and haven't been able to visit the site as mush as I would like to but that aside and the 601 post I need to look at here goes....

Yesterday a gentleman from Michigan lowsided going around a turn missed the guardrail and went about 80 feet down the ravine and died on impact. Here's the article link

http://www.thedailytimes.com/apps/pb.../NEWS/70713001

As of right now Deals Gap has officially been closed. There is an accident that has taken the life of two other people without getting into details here's a brief as taken from another site

"A couple two-up on a Gold Wing trike hit a boat trailer. They are both dead. Apparently the scene is a mess; the boat went over the hill and the victims are trapped under the trailer wheels. The Gap may well be closed overnight as they clean up.

That's three in 24 hours, y'all. Be careful out there."

sorry for the sour news but be careful out there folks, and for those who head down to the area please, please stay in your limits

Hey Sarge,

Man that is bad news.
You remember my post from a few months back about being behind a father/son duo that crashed?
Guess where that happened and guess where the dad wound up?
About 100 feet down the same cliff. He made it OK. Sad news about this guy.

And really bad news about the couple.

From the article, it seems excessive speed was not an issue with the first guy and I have to doubt it was the case for the Goldwing trike. Either way, I fear we are seeing what might lead to a change in The Gap as we have come to know it.
You know, I have spent many weekends there and it is a sad truth that most of the crashes (especially so most of the worst crashes) seem to be out of town folks who just are not familiar with the road. I hate it for everybody. It is a great road but it can sure bite hard.

I'm planning to be there Sunday. Leaving Bham around 6 am for a day-trip.

Have fun and ride safe!

Brian

edit to add: Just visited "the other site" to read more. Sounds like I might have been wrong about the trike. Sounds like one major horrific incident.
Sad news for all the families involved.

And another bad part about this all? The various administrations will look at these incidents and try to pass the buck onto other motorcyclists, because its all our fault, you know?

I'm sure law enforcement is going to be thick up there for the next few weeks

Visitors have no right to run these roads like it's a idiot-friendly piece of highway. What this really means is that you local guys who really do know the road will be treated just like a bunch of newbie tourists. And watch them gear up their patrol gear! If they don't have BMW's or ST's - just wait - they have been ordered.

The LEO tactics will change too. Don't think you can run because they will run trap and post stations so if you try to run you will pay grandly later. You'll see the Badge off his bike at the end or in the mid of a straight shooting radar. You pass he doesn't do ****. Good to go - right? NOT! 3/4 mile down the road in the next nearest wide spot they have three cruisers and a paddy wagon writing tickets. Two or three ST's at the next wide spot to run down the morons that think they're "past it."

I would be very surprised if they don't ramp up their pressure on local establishments as well.

I hate to see it but if new comers expect a Disney ride this is the price we all pay.
